OK MUCH MORE DIRE PROBLEMS NOW!
Got it doing a zig zag when suddenly it hissed and smoke literally started seeping out everywhere! WHAT IS HAPPENING! Naturally i turned it off, disconnected it and put it outside.
Lol sorry, this was meant to be in DIY could a mod move it =) Sorry!
I think it is time for a professional servicing. It was likely so full of dust lint and crud the friction of the mechanics caused the stuff to start to smolder. This likely means carbon scoring and potential heat damage to some critical components. I don't think the zig zag had anything causative to do with it. It just reached a smoldering point.
Sewing machines require fine tolerances and clean surfaces. Cleaning off carbon deposits is not something you can do with even very fine sand paper. You need buffing compound to polish those surfaces again and get the crud off. Unless you are a mechanic with the proper equipment _I_ would suggest you leave this to the professionals.
In the worst case... the innards are fried, warped and scored to the point of disaster. In the best... It was just your motor that overheated and blew smoke into the machine. In any event... there is no doubt some smoke damage that needs attention.
I may be slow... But I sure am gimpy.

Thanks mate, mum said as much as I mentioned your response =)
If it was one of those electronic models the board could be fried. Which would also tie the problem to the max speed issue.

Just noticed this post if yoy haven't had your machine fixed the problem is the noise suspresion capasator on the motor has shorted it can be removed the machine will work fine with out it. You will find it across the motor terminals where the cords plug in. The only problem will be interferance with the Tv or radio.Only attept if you are confortable with elect work.
