Is this sewing machine good enough

    Hi Guys,

I would like to start making gear and I would like to know if this cheap sewing machine would get the job done.

    http://www.canadiantire.ca/AST/browse/3/HouseHome/Laundry/Irons/PRD~0432557P/Singer+Pixie+Plus+8-Stitch+Sewing+Machine.jsp?locale=en

    Thank you for any input.

i am not fond of the new plastic machines..that's not to say that it won't "get er done" it depends on what you plan on doing and how much of it your looking at. at 70 bucks, you can buy three vintage singer "blacks"! ( this assumes youre willing to look for a machine rather than just go out and score something because it's convenient ) any one of 'em will probably out last the plastic newer wizbang and hold a resale value, as well. the portable sewing machines seem to command a higher price, i set out looking for a vintage singer portable, but stumbled on to a singer 15-91 built into a cabinet with fold out extentions for the work area, for 20$. i had to put in another 10$ for a power cord and replacement orings. if available, craigs list has a lot to offer.

I know nothing about sewing machines.

Where would you suggest begin my search for vintage singers?

I would not use that to sew even normal stuff much less gear. You should be able to find a decent used machine on Craigslist for 70 bucks.

For us Canadians - try kijiji.ca

I bought a White Rotary Model 666 for $40 and it included almost all the feet (just missing the Zipper foot)

I am trying trying Kijiji but just not sure 100% what I am looking for.

I do not know the brands that are considered good.

I thought I found something but after searching there where many bad reviews on the brand name Euro-Pro so I decided to give it a pass.

I strongly suggest you make friends with the local sewing machine repair shop. You might pay a little more initially but you will get a machine that has been well serviced and in good shape. When you are dealing with used machines IMO brand is the last thing you look at. What you want is a good solid functional machine. It makes little difference what brand it is if you are going to stay with gear making. Your local sewing machine mechanic can give you hands on guidance.
