    cordage ???

Hi folks. At REI this wknd and impulse bought a couple of these http://www.rei.com/product/799630/pm...ckage-of-50-ft.

the sheath is poly but the core is nylon. I figure I could use some for tarp guylines, but my real question is - could these be used for a structural ridgeline? just curious. Thanks!

Not really for a Structural ridgline as the nylon will stretch and the sheath of poly makes up very little of the overall strength in these types of cord.

Personally, I don't see stretch as being a game breaker when it comes to structural ridgelines. So it wouldn't hurt to try it.

Full disclosure, all my SRLs are made from Dyneema.

If you use your SRL as more of a guide as I do most of the time, stretch is not as big a deal. I do use amsteel for my SRL only for those time where I need to rely on it to compensate for suspension angles that change due to trees too far apart or if I have to set up my tarp very low to the ground.

Thanks everyone. I think I'm going to play with this stuff to see how it works. I am still in the figuring-out-the-basics phase and I now have 150 ft of this stuff to play with. So, here's hoping!

I'm interested in this as an alternative to paracord for miscellaneous use. Let me know how much this stuff stretches compared to 550 paracord if possible.

I have used it as a SRL....if it stretched some....I did not notice.
Could use it on the tarp but it absorbs water.....there are better options for that.

I have some of that too. Last year I used it for everything on my tarp and a ridge line for my bug netting, not sure how structural it was. Worst case scenario, it breaks and then you know it won't work like that.

As noted above, when used in your ridgeline as an indicator of the distance between ends of the hammock, most any cord will do. That's because there is not "supposed" to be any tension on it in that application.

However, I've been in a situation more than once where the only trees were far apart and my structural ridgeline truly became "structural". Only zing-it or better would hold together in that circumstance. I know people that have snapped their 1.75mm Zing-it in such conditions.
