    Eno Slap Strap noob question

    Hey,
total noob here. I have an Eno double nest and I bought the slap strap pros. I camped out last night and my butt wound up on the ground when I woke up. Luckily with a good sleeping bag and Thermarest, I didn't wake up feeling all that bad, but I think I need to replace my suspension system.

With that being said, I am horrible at modifying gear and usually when I do, I make it much worse, so I would like to keep my hammock in tact and use carabiner. I am currently horrible at tying knots, but am willing to learn.

I am also a pretty big guy (6ft2 265) so I guess my new system would have to support my big frame.

So what would a simple, elegant and strong alternative to the slap straps be?

    Thank,
    Bill

    1st post BTW

keep reading on here and i am sure you will find what you need. under suspension forumn look for grizz- aka - proffessor hammock, who has some excellent videos on hanging suspension, which I need to review myself as my first set up is on its way. I too am bigger then the average bear..at 6'2" and 350. so i feel ya.. From what ive read the eno straps stretch alot I personally am looking to go to python straps ( google that one ) or just some 1" webbing from strap down with perhaps a cinch buckle that way i can hook carbainer from hammock into loop and cinch to desired hight..
good luck looking forward to hear how it works out for you

Most of us (including yours truly) throw away the slap straps and carabiners, then purchase 100% Polyester (not nylon) straps. If you see it on a roll in the hardware store, its more than likely nylon. I got my straps and whoopie slings from Stuart at www.whoopieslings.com. He has a diagram & video on his website that explains the proper use of what he sells.

Shugemery and ProfessorHammock on youtube also have a good vid that explains in great detail how to rig your hammock in a lightweight and efficient manner.

Welcome to the forum and congrats on your hammock!

The Eno Slap Straps are absolutely terrible and well noted here on the forums for their problems. I have a set, and only experimented with them once and they've never been back out of their bag since. Not only do they stretch all to be heck, but the different so called adjustment areas that are pre-sewn in them are pretty much utterly useless. If your able to send them back, that is what I'd do and invest in some better made tree slaps, you'll be a lot happier.

Had the same experience with the Slap Straps. This is a known issue with nylon webbing. I bought a set of polyester tree huggers and whoopie slings from Stuart at whoopieslings.com and I'm as happy as I could be. You could also DIY the same thing without too much difficulty. Probably the cheapest option wouild be to get some of that webbing and just attach it to the hammock and tree via knots/carabiners/dutch clips, but that won't be as light as the whoopie slings. GL.

If you want to keep the hammock stock buy the complete cinch buckle system from arrowhead equipment and just attach the carabiner to the chain link ( little gray loop) the same can be done with the complete whoopie sling suspension from whoopieslings.com .then later when your up to it you can pull out the carabiner and rope and fully install the new suspension.
    Good luck.

Dont be too quick to throw away those slap straps. I made a nice rifle sling out of one, and the other has found its way on to several different projects around the house. its good material, just not for hanging hammocks. +1 on professor hammock, and arrowhead equipment.
    with two m's, like "hammock."

The slap straps work OK if you put the biner right next to the tree. Otherwise you'll get too much stretch.

Look at my gallery to see how to switch them out for whoopies...

Replace the slap straps with a new form of suspension. Cinch buckles or Whoopie Slings are are you 2 best bets for ease of adjustment.

Keep the slap straps though. They are good for putting around the tree and hooking gear to with 'biners.

As much as I hate to repeat everyone else, I had the same experience as you. But you really can't go wrong with Whoopie Slings. They do the job perfectly with minimal effort from you.
