Can you combine different fill powers of Down?

Ok...so I have 650 fill power and I have 800 fill power. Right now I'll be making 3 under quilts for us, 3/4 length, 3 season, my plans were with the 650 fill power on these UQ.

I don't want to use all of my 800 fill power because later on I'll be making us winter UQ. But, I'm curious as to what would happen if I mix some of the 800 fill power with the 650 fill power, will that help the 650 loft better and insulate better?

What would happen if I mixed the entire batch of both fill powers all together?

Or are both of these questions just silly and a waste of good 800 down?

Sure, adding 800 will increase the loft of the 650. Of course the other way to view this is that adding 650 to the 800 will decrease the loft of the 800.

What is really happening is that with either the 650 or the 800, the same loft can be achieved. The 800 simply fills the space while weighing less.

Thanks, that makes it clear. I was thinking that 800 was warmer and that was more my concern.

I ran the down calculator and there is only a difference of 2 oz, so I'll stick with the 650 for the 3/4 3 season UQ and use the 800 for the winter UQ since it will be full length and weigh more as it is.

800 _is_ warmer by weight per volume.
But it is a variation on the old "Which weighs more, a pound of lead or a pound of feathers?" 3" of loft is 3" of loft but 3" of 800 weighs less than 3" of 650.
I may be slow... But I sure am gimpy.

not to mention a real problem to get an even mix.

A mess? Your not kidding!! I started harvesting the down out of the expedition comforter yesterday. I thought I was doing a good job keeping it tidy with shop vac in hand, and in a small room with the furnace off, and doors shut to that room. Down goes every where and is constantly tickling the nose and driving us all nuts even even in the other rooms. You can think it's contained and you've done a good job....but it's sneaky stuff. My husband went downstairs to change the filter...and of course there was itty bitty fluffy down on it. Some of it had floated down into the air intakes in the room. When I harvest more, I'll cover those up. Lessons, lessons, lessons

Had I been harvesting the 800 down I would have been in the tub with shower curtain shut or in the small pop up duck tent because that is in pillows. With this big comforter, and having to cut each sewn through baffle, I needed a lot of room.

One of the members here sets up a tent indoors and does his down work in there.

I used a shop-vac to harvest down from a comforter... Once... Next time, I'll put some no-see-um on a paper towel tube and only fill that... I overfilled the shop-vac and when I opened it, it went everywhere...

I'd say don't mix, but use the 800 in the center baffles and overstuff slightly. Or make the center baffles a little thicker and use the 800 there... I suffer from CBS and cold feet quite easily (even in my bed) and every time I sleep in a hammock, I wake with frozen feet even in warm temps.

anyway, My thought was put the most insulation where you need it, in the center 3 baffles...

    Pics! I want Pics!

Glad to see you're taking the DIY plunge! I have my UQ all laid out and cut. Bottom layer is marked, but I haven't started sewing yet...
