    superfly question for the masses

I have been looking at tarps for waaaay too long. Looking for something durable enough for use twice a month, even through winter. About half of my trips are with a boy scout troop, others are one or two day trips. I will be covering a Skeeter beater pro and like having a little extra room. I have narrowed my search down to Maccat deluxe or a superfly. My concern is that the superfly is just going to be too big. Is it so big that it will be a hassle to set up? Will the coverage be overkill? I have been using a 10 x 12 equinox in an a frame. Thanks everyone, I have learned so much from the members here.

The Superfly is only two inches longer than a MacCat Deluxe.

Both are fantastic tarps, and are expressly designed for hammock coverage. Neither is a hassle to set up.

Hey freebird, I use a Superfly with my WBBB and love it. I worried about the extra flaps being in the way when I was trying to decide as well. However, I'm so glad I have them now. When i want the flaps open i just link them together above the tarp, however I've used them much more often then i thought I would. Being that you are in Ohio you will like the way you can close down the tarp at night to block the wind. I'm an Assistant Scoutmaster and do most of my hammock camping with Scouts as well. The boys are gradually catching the hammock bug just by observing my setup. Have fun out there!

And, the doors on the Superfly might come in handy while at scout camp...when you want to have a little privacy to change your clothes...just saying...

My Superfly is great. It covers my hammock with enough room to clip my backpack onto my hammock suspension. The doors do a great job of keeping out the elements. The Superfly has several configurations depending on the weather so it is versatile. All that space comes in handy when the weather is bad. I hike with a guy who has the MacCat...he really enjoys it also. I am not sure how they stack up price wise, but both are quality products.

    Happy Hammocking!

Really like my superfly. It's nice to have the option of tying up the doors and putting it in porch mode in good weather, but if a breeze or a storm come in, you can really lock it down.

    Cheers

I have looked at the superfly as well. Have any of you guys set it up as a tarp shelter not on a hammock? I was curious if the doors got in the way of other tarp configurations. The madcat being fairly rectangle could be used as a lean to and such.

I took the superfly on the AT over spring break and had to use it as a tent one night with my trek poles to stand up the ridge line. I was greatful for the flaps because it was a windy night and I was able to close the ends to block the wind. The tarp performed flawlessly as a tent/canopy. Enjoy:-)
