if you go with the SMC rings use the desending rings and not the descending/rigging rings
    these: http://www.rei.com/product/471123/smc-descending-ring
    not these: http://www.rei.com/product/799957/sm...escending-ring

i have used both type with a sliding ring suspension and find that the round cross section rings are much easier to slid up and down the lines, plus they are cheaper and liter in weight. have not used either with a webbing suspension...
    just my 2¢

I would be using this setup:

HH straps with a clasp (D-ring?) holding 2 rings.
I learned a new word today. This devise is referred to as a carabiner.

Thanks. I thought about that. Those rigging rings seem too wide. There might not be enough space inside of the carabiner to allow the rings to clamp down on the rope.

There's an entirely different application of clinching rings, which brings different seriousness to their quality: A pair of them to make a sling (or whatever it is called) in which to carry infants and babies.

(Edit: "Slingrings was easy enough to find)

The folks that market these--yes, another niche cottage industry -- go to a lot of trouble and expense to be sure the rings met quality and testing standards. (Just as with SMC descender rings.) No wonder, juries being sympathetic to babies and likely not too easy on easy-going, HYOH, parents and mfgs.

When I ran across these a year ago, the sizes or weight ratings were far below those of interest here. Babies aren't that fat......... yet. But the expected multiple of safe to tested BS strength of 11-15 was there.

Question: are you using the stock Hennessy rope?

I recall reading that using a Grada Hitch on the HH stock rope can cause damage to the ropes center!

What I have been doing is using a climbing rated carabiner attached to the loop on the tree huggers. I then tie a modified Munters Hitch...basically the rope goes down through the biner, towards me and around the rope, and back up through the biner.
I find that it has enough holding power to allow adjustments. To tie off I just put pressure on the hammock side of the rope...the "knot will roll to the bottom side of the biner. Then tie off with a slippery half-hitch and a half-hitch with the loop.

Has held me for several nights, one of which had STRONG WINDS. only hardwear need is two carabiners.

That was the plan. I'll have to look into this matter further. Thanks for the warning.

I don't know what kind of rope the person was using in his video. He was using a HH, that is certain. I'll post the video tonight for review.

One thought about the linked thread. The thread you linked to didn't point out any trouble shooting, IE was the user of the failed rig using pitted (from extensive use) rings that rubbed against the rope? That's why I pointed out that I would prefer some kind of casted/polished design, preferably no joins. A poor manufacturing join can create an uneven surface at the join, possibly abrasive enough to fray rope. These kinds of suspension applications are high tension, low quality rings that aren't universally smooth could be problematic.

    Anyway, thanks for the warning.

You should give my method a try. It works well and eliminates several pieces of hardware...which means several less points of failure.

I read the comments. Others pointed out some of the issues mentioned here.

+1 to avoiding the Garda Hitch. It will pinch and damage rope under 4mm and has a suggested load limit of 220lb (100kg).

Last year I used exactly the setup you're talking about pulsemod. I had the rope coming off the end of my hammock tied so that I had a loop to hook into. From there I had a S hook, carabiner would be more secure, hooked onto the two decent rings. I then had 1 inch polypro buckled through with a slippery half hitch to prevent slippage. On the other end of the webbing I had sowed a loop witch I ran the webbing through to cinch it to the tree.

The rings I used were the ones recommended from REI above. Hope this helps. Ultimately, whatever is safe and convenient for you works.
