I went ahead and purchased a WBBB 1.7 single layer. As a relatively poor grad student, this will probably be the one hammock-ing purchase for now, at least until I spend a night in it.

After I cash in some federal paychecks this summer I may, depending on my probable positive experience, purchase an UQ and a TQ. I won't have a tarp going out to WA, so depending on the weather forecast that will be the deciding as to whether I tent or set up the hammock. Or I buy a cheap-o tarp. I gotta say that browsing some of these cottage industry gear stores, it's real tempting.

I'm interested in switching out the structural ridge line and replacing the adjustable webbing suspension with whoopieslings as instructed by Watermonkey in his video. But again, that will come later. I'd hate to invest without first hand experience.

Welcome from Texas. If weight is not an issue, a cheapo poly tarp will get you by, but you will want something to keep the dew or rain off of you. You can get by with a cheap CCF pad, better if you had a double layer, but since you ordered a SL, It will not be very comfortable. You will need some type of insulation, even if the lows are in the 60's. As far as comfort, there will be no comparison to sleeping on the ground. Of course, the more money you spend, the more comfortable you will be.
We are now ready to start our way down the Great Unknown. We are three quarters of a mile in the depth of the earth. We have an unknown distance yet to run, an unknow river yet to explore. What falls there are, we know not; what rocks beset the channel, we know not; what walls rise over the river, we know not. Ah, well! We may conjecture many things. The men talk as cheerfully as ever; jests are bandied about freely this morning; but to me the cheer is somber and the jests are ghastly. Powell 1869

What part of Souther NM are you in? I've spent some time down you way.

Well, I do have my neo-air, that'll some offer insulation. Sliding around may prove problematic. But yeah, depending on my experience, I'll be investing in some gear to improve comfort.

Watching Shug's videos I've since favorite'd JRB and the HG store sites for future purchases.
