    Detachable Ridgeline

I'm still new compared to most here and learnng everyday. I've found that once we hang our hammocks we are using them as a place to sit around and shoot the bull til time to turn in, since we don't carry any kind of camp chairs or stools. The ridgeline gets in the way when sitting in the hammock and I seem to remember a thread where someone addresses this. It seemed like he attached his ridgeline to a loop at each end with caribiners, that way he could disconnect it and lay it to the side til time to lay down. Am I right or did I misconstrue the purpose of why he did that? Would that even make sense to do? It sounds logical to me but like I said, I'm still learning.

It makes a lot of sense. As long as the overall length stayed the same, there's no reason it can't be done. It only needs to detatch on one end. This is one of the reasons I am favoring my Switchbacks, since they don'y have a ridgeline and the netting unzips on both sides. It's really nice to be able to lounge in them.
We are now ready to start our way down the Great Unknown. We are three quarters of a mile in the depth of the earth. We have an unknown distance yet to run, an unknow river yet to explore. What falls there are, we know not; what rocks beset the channel, we know not; what walls rise over the river, we know not. Ah, well! We may conjecture many things. The men talk as cheerfully as ever; jests are bandied about freely this morning; but to me the cheer is somber and the jests are ghastly. Powell 1869

Sometimes the ridgeline gets twisted around the end of the hammock and the suspension line. (There's a gremlin in my pack who does this while I'm hiking, and I don't notice until the hammock is hung and full of quilts and pillows.) It's easier to straighten things out by unfastening the ridgeline than by unhooking the suspension line from the tree straps, even with a msh. I use a Dutch ridgeline biner placed to connect the two parts of the ridgeline, which are permanently attached at the ends. The connection is located above my chest when I lie in the hammock, so it's a good place to fasten a ridgeline light. A variety of other fasteners could be used for this chore, including the non-hardware choice of a loop and a lanyard knot, but I opt for the quality stuff when combating gremlins.

I made a detachable ridgeline for my Warbonnet Blackbird using soft shackle type loop. Very handy to be able to detach the RL for sitting for sure.

+1 on the soft shackle loop. I put a small amsteel nacrabiner on mine with an adjustable ridge line. On/Off with ease and no hardware.

OK, pictures are worth a thousand words Can you all explain it further and add pics for us noobies? I sat in my sons HH scout and did not like the fact that my head was against the RL. Hopefully get my WBBB soon and would like to do this mod. THanks
