New Heavy Hanger!!

Hello fellow hangers. I have recently become a Hammock lover and would like to get opinions, tip for those big hikers out there. I know there are a bunch!! I personally shied away from the hammock world for fear of breaking things, mostly my back. I a 6''9' 390lb dude. Though seeing how devoted my good friend Ken Troklus of Fort Hickory, is to hammocks I thought I would give it a go!. I have done my research and tested it all out and am in love with the comfy world of hammocks!! So for you Big guys out there who are nervous, lets share and get outside together! Shoot, now that I get better sleep out there I can stay longer, hike farther. I plan to start a Youtube channel devoted to Heavy Hangers and I hope we all can share and learn from each other. Also would love to get out there and have a heavy hanger camp out!! what you all think?

Welcome, I second that on the heavy hanger, I'm a slim 6'2" 350 so was little leary too, just got my first set up and doing my first hang in may down in hoosier national forest...
I guess if we can do more research in eatin, we can do it in hanging
let me know when you start your channel and heres to longer hikes and better sleep

You might find a nitch in the heavy weight hammock world. My son in law is in great shape but at 6'7" around 250 I was also worried about a hammock failure. I asked around and settled on WBBB 1.7 double. I have had 2 spine surgeries and can tell you it is serious stuff. Welcome to the great place to hang on the net! Welcome to the HF and from the 300+ gravity group. What is your setup?

I started hanging when only 1 hammock (a Speer hammock that is no longer offered) was rated for our size. Times are changing with the double layered hammocks. My next hammock was a WBBB dlb, and recently I upgraded my Speer to a Switchback dlb. Both wonderful. Also look at the Dangerbird dbl, that is a very nice looking all-in one hammock. One of the interesting developments is longer hammocks for taller people. The Wilderness Logic's Night Owl comes in a double that is longer that has gotten good reviews by tall hikers. If anyone likes any of the hammocks, send e-mails or call the vendors. They have all been extremely responsive and often are willing to make custom adjustments to their hammocks.

Please note that a longer tarp maybe needed if one gets a longer hammock. AHE makes several great tarps. WB Superfly with doors is a great tarp.

As to suspension, I found the 1" straps from AHE to be fantastic and recently got 2" straps from Strapworks. For me whoopie slings seem to have much less stretch (Whoopieslings.com is my favorite), but note what DemostiX says about breaking in a hammock and suspension (e.g., http://goo.gl/dPlWY). Dutchware is great to make things easy.
