    Prospective hanger from CT

Hello hangers! I'm Dan, from CT. I plan on buying a hammock this week. I'm looking at the HH Expedition side zip (I'm 5'4'' 120 lbs.). Is this a good beginners hammock? I have been told that the stock rain fly isn't great, but that upgraded flies cant be used with the HH snakeskins. Is it worth the upgrade? I'm also looking at the sleeping pad sold by HH.

My Exped was delivered last week and at this point I've spent three nights in it and slept very well. Mine has the stock tarp and it was no trouble staying dry through a light shower Saturday night as well as spending an hour or so in it during the steady rain we had Sunday afternoon though I did take it down before Sunday night's downpour.

Welcome! The stock tarp will keep you dry but some people like a bigger tarp so they can do other things under the tarp when weather is really bad.. For example, with a bigger tarp you can cook under it, have a bit more privacy to change if around other campers. Bigger tarp can also be used to stop wind if you are not in the most ideal location and temps drop and wind starts up.

Others love the smaller tarp for the weight savings.

Many have tarp in skins and then hammock in a bishop bag. So if the tarp is wet, you don't pack it with your hammock. I use one set of skins for tarp and other set of skins for hammock. I just like 'em.

Hello and Welcome to the Forums from Canada! It is a good start- absolutely. There are also many great deals on the sales forum and that could be an option too to pick up some nice kit as well.

That hammock should be just right. They say its good for people up to 6 ft. but that is kind of like military sizing: works but doesn't fit. I am 6 ft. and have probably slept in mine about 50 times so I have a pretty good idea of how it fits. For you it should be great. Hennessys are very well designed and built. When I first saw the tarp I thought "No way is that little thing going to keep me dry", but I have been in some hard rains and stayed perfectly dry.
