    Materials?

I'm an avid DIYer with plenty of sewing experience. Not that familiar with making gear. But from what I've gathered from the instructions, I feel like I have a pretty good handle on everything (for a nood) except materials.

What kind of fabrics are available that work well for hammocks, tarps, bug-nets? If I head down to my local fabric store, what should I look for?

I collect old tents. They are easy to come by especially if you don't care about poles or the odd rips here and there. From a decent size tent (8 x 10 dome) you can usually get enough material for a bug net, and the floor makes a good tarp. The nylon will make stuff sacks and the zippers have all sorts of uses. Freecycle.org is a good place to start if you want some old tents to play with.
