    Hitchcraft

I just refreshed and some new random images came up on the home page. One was a devise called the Hitchcraft, used in suspending a hammock. Not having been around here when that thing was being used/discussed, can anyone offer any info about it? Just curious.

I've never heard of it either. But here's a short video from the manufacturer of a hammock set up with them:

TeeDee tried the Hitchcraft back when they became known.

First, it is a well designed and made device. It is versatile and easy to use.

The problem TeeDee had in using it for a hammock suspension is that he was using 3 mm Amsteel rope. Now for a hammock suspension that is not a small diameter rope, but for the Hitchcraft it is.

The problem that TeeDee experienced is that the small diameter Amsteel would sometimes slip through the Hitchcraft device. In doing that it "stripped" the cam locking action, i.e., the Amsteel essentially drilled a hole through the cam lock and it was no longer able to lock on any 3 mm rope.

He reported this to the inventor/maker of Hitchcraft and the inventor/maker independently reported back that he then had the same thing happen and that in the future he would no longer recommend 3 mm or smaller diameter rope for use with the Hitchcraft (at least for a hammock suspension).

The bottom line: If you use a suspension rope larger than 3 mm, then it will work well and is a very good, well made and sturdy device, that is easy and quick to use.

Note that this can probably also happen with any device that uses a cam locking action when used with rope/cord at the small end of the recommended range of diameters for use. In particular, it could probably happen also with the popular LineLoc devices. Both TeeDee and I would highly recommend testing the Lineloc with any small diameter rope/cord you want to use under heavy loads to find out if the same would happen.

I had just posted about the Hitchcraft earlier today, about how easy it was to overtighten, and how I did so one time with my HH.

It worked good on my HH Explorer UL, but that had thicker rope on it than the current models do.
