I know the folks at Torreya and would be happy to go there with you!

PM me to discuss and I'll make a call.

My friend who is the manager of Sebastian Inlet State Park just returned from a trip. Here is his reply (I sent him the OP's notice):

    <<Hi Sandy,

    Thanks for the heads up!

It is a done deal. Just need to work out the logistics.

    The people have been heard....;-)

    Have a great weekend.

Good deal. I have not heard back from the Torreya park manager. I figure if I don't hear something in the next week or two I will call him back.

Of course it is officially to hot to camp in Fl now.

After talking w/Anna @ Torreya, it sounds like they MAY allow it, but the restriction which only allows certain trees is probably going to be severely limiting.

We need to go there and do a walk thru with them and hopefully they'll allow a good number of trees that are not "technically" part of the campsites.

    Hey Funny Money,

Going out as a group sounds like a good idea. I could probably get away during the week or a Saturday or Sunday. Itsandy is also interested in participating and pmed me with his phone number. Do we want to get together before hand and chat about what we want to discus with them so we are all on the same page? I wouldn't mind meeting other hangers in the area anyway.

    Thanks,

I too am concerned about how "designated trees" is going to work. In February, I hiked the length of both loops at Torreya and went to all 3 of the backcountry campsites. There are plenty of usable trees for hanging (I paced and reconnoitered several potential hangs at all sites), but what is suitable for my longer Skeeter Beeter or WBBB, may not be the best spot for someone's GT Nano.

I also question how they are going to identify/mark the "approved" hanging trees. What are they going to do? Nail a sign saying "Attach hammocks here only"? Doesn't make much sense to me.

I checked, and sorry, I didn't take any suitable pictures of the campsites. I have one of the Challenge Backcountry site, but it faces away from the good hanging spots.

One additional comment. It seems like there is some focus on Torreya more than other campgrounds. I presume that is because it has a functional and self contained hiking trail network. Interestingly, the foilage and terrain there make it uniquely suited to hammocking, more than any other State Park I have ever been to.

It probably has more to do with me posting a lot in this thread and Torreya being a local favorite hiking/camping spot. I wouldn't mind hanging down at St. George Island or maybe over in the Suwanee River SP as well. (Trying to think of what other SPs allow camping in this area.)

Plus I think a lot of the other State Parks in this area are more geared for RV/Car camping. (Ochlockonee River State Park)

Speaking of SPs, we need to organize a hang for the Panhandle and NW Florida area one of these days if someone is not doing one already. Hammock hanging on the beach anyone?

    Thanks,
