    Suwannee river state park

I went to Suwannee River State park in Live Oak, Fl yesterday, to look into hammock camping on the Big Oak Trail. The park staff told me that hammock camping is not allowed in the park or on the trail, because you cannot tie anything to the trees. Where can I get this new information in order to enlighten these people? According to the posts I read the pilot program is over and the laws have changed.

I think your best bet is to do two things... talk to the park manager and also to JaxHiker. The park manager is the one that hasn't gotten the word out to his/her people (I'm assuming that it's ok to hang in the park since most are allowing it but not all) and JaxHiker so that he can help out if needed and squeak a bit more with his contact at DEP.

    Good luck!

Not sure if this will help...but I just saved this thread to my iPad's home screen. We could simply bring up this thread and ask the ranger(s) to read all the references and authorization messages.

That said, has anyone actually hung at a FL SP? Do they make you go off somewhere or do they find a campsite that has suitable trees at the back? Mmm how do you hang without intruding on your neighbors? Or how much quiet/sleep can you get if you are hanging really close to someone's site?

Lastly, how do you think this conversation will end?

"do you have a site where I can park my 15' camping trailer (Aliner Classic) AND hang a hammock?"

Now we need California to jump on this,
I may be dumb, but at least I'm ugly!

I've done so much, with so little, for so long, now I can do anything with nothing.

It's not peer pressure, it's just your turn.

I hung at Paynes Prairie State Park (just south of here, in Micanopy), near the end of the pilot program's duration. I contacted Mr. Bateman to find out which sites were available at the park and hung at one of 'em (I can dig out the e-mail if anyone wants the information in regards to that park) with no issues from the park staff--well, one potential issue: they didn't have the sites memorized as to which were hammock-friendly. Which wasn't a problem for me but could've been if it was someone who hadn't done their homework.

It wasn't an RV site, but (if memory serves) I think they had a couple that were. I wasn't really looking for an RV site (matter of fact, I was looking for the opposite, but they didn't have any true primitive sites that had been okayed), so my memory may be incorrect there.

    Hope it helps!

Yay! This is good news. Seems silly people weren't able too, but I'm glad they can now.

In Florida, there are many State parks around and you can go deep into them away from the cars to get away.
Enjoy and have fun with your family, before they have fun without you

I know. Who needs to be at an overcrowded campsite as I've said before. This usually has screaming kids, loud radios, food smells to attract the wildlife, and yahoos that feel the need to smoke many substances. I'll pick up water and move far away.
