Called the park and the answer was yes to hammocks but only 3 (tent) sites at each primitive campsite. A fire ring, no water, no privies, and you pick your own trees (haven't a clue why that was mentioned).
I was told that "wide" straps are mandatory, no strings. 2" thick was mention but when I questioned the size and thickness (!) some back-pedaling occured. Now to see when I can get down there probably 2 - 3 weeks out. Getting warmer all the time!

Instead of the St. Sebastian SP I'm going to try Kissimmee Prairie the night of 22nd or 23rd (I need to burn some leave). The Primitive Campsite is either 2.5 or 2.7 miles from the park HQ. I will post here what I find out.

I called in for a reservation and got one with no problem. When I told "her" that I would be carrying a hammock her only response was to ask it it had tree straps and to specify checking in at the Park office before 4 PM and not to speed on the park roads.

Gonna be HOT so I asked about stashing extra water out via Military Trail. The answer was No. Bummer.

When I checked in to get my permit for the Primitive site I was not asked if I had straps or not. Fact is I wasn't even asked what gear I had!

I don't know if anyone has posted about this yet but I just read the FTA Trail FAQ's from their website and here is what it says about shelters.....

    Shelters

Q: Are shelters available along the Trail?
A: There are currently only seven hiker shelters along the Florida Trail. It is therefore necessary for you to provide your own tent. We recommend tents, bivys or hammocks with no-see-um netting.

I am pleased that hammocks are mentioned and am wondering when these wordings were updated.

Glad to see the state has updated the site to include hammock verbiage. I'll try to follow up on the 2" straps, though. It was my understanding that wouldn't be a requirement.

I will advise people, though, to be persistent if told no. I called Gold Head this week knowing they've had a big turnover in staff and when I asked for a list of hammock-approved sites I was told, "There are none." Miraculously, when I disagreed and said there was, indeed, a list, she managed to get the info for me. Had I not challenged her (like I presume most wouldn't) I would have figured I was out of luck.

For those that are interested, the list is: 23, 24, 25, 37, and 37.

South Florida Water Management District Lands

Reviving an old topic to add lands managed by the South Florida Water Management District which also include a number of WMAs and WEAs. I could not find any information regarding the use of hammocks on their website nor when submitting for a special use application and license, which is required to camp at certain locations.

This was from a recent email exchange regarding hammock camping at Hickory Hammock Equestrian Center along the Florida Trail.

Per Land Management Assistant, Kimberly Willis:
"We currently have no rule prohibiting the use of hammocks on SFWMD lands. All that I typically say to people is there may or may not be an issue with having the proper placement of trees to hang your hammock. I think at HHEC, you should be okay with finding a place to hang these."

Hammock use and any other associated lines may be attached to trees that are minimum of 12 inches in diameter measured at chest height and using a minimum of 1 inch wide flat web straps. Some parks may provide hammock posts instead of trees.

Glad to see they knocked the requirement down to 1". My old straps are 1.5" and my cinch-buckle suspension uses 1". I made a set of 2" straps just to make the state park folks happy but have never had a chance to use them. Oh well....they'll make some nice extensions.
