I've got a good relationship with the trails guy with several of our local state parks. I've already emailed him to see what he's heard.

at Ricketts Glenn, Pa State Park they gladly let people hammock camp anywhere on site. tents had to be on pad. as of 1/1/12 Hammock Camping will only be done over pad. the mulch pad is 16'-16' and trees 2-3' farther making it almost impossible.

the reason for the change was people were abusing the privilege. clearing areas under hammocks and damaging trees. i talked to ranger and he fell bad that a few ruined it for all, but they are not staffed to police these problem people. im going there Friday and will give trip report.

i said this just to remind people it is a privilege that can be taken away. not all hammockers are on HF and not all follow LNT. we need to set example and teach those we see violating rules.

This is so true. I've observed some that have taken saws and cleared places for their hammocks, not just undergrowth but live branches too. And have seen tarp lines cut and left on the trees because of improper knots impossible to untie. These people were clueless more than careless. A little education can go a long way and we can set the best examples.

I make 2 or 3 trips a year to Florida every year to visit friends and especially to be a part of the Annual Hang. I'm hoping this new trial period will prove that hammocks can be less damaging and those of us that use & promote them them are environmentally aware!

Easy-peasy. Let's you adjust the tarp via CRL regardless of how it's attached to the trees.
I was thinking about that at first, but that would force me to place my CRL pretty high up, which is fine for general fair weather, but when the storms start to roll in, I would need it lower. And if I simply gave it more line on each end I would get a loose tarp. Hopefully these ladders will allow me to slide the tarp up and down depending on how I need it. But again, this is only in State Parks, so its not going to be a permanent situation for me.

Let's just enjoy this topic for a while. If you'd like to discuss strategies for adjusting your suspension methods, I'd suggest starting a thread in the Suspension Systems, Ridgelines, & Bug Nets forum. Thanks.

    Correction:

Unless I am badly mistaken they are OUR parks located in OUR country. Not their parks!

errrr, yes... is there a non-political point you are wanting to make about the State Parks?

Amen, as a land manager of a piece of state land I think that they are handling it exactly the way they should. The ball is in our court to make it work. Kudzus to FL state parks!

AMAZING!! What a commendable accomplishment. Never thought I'd see it happen. Recently, I was looking at the posts they have installed for clothes line and thinking, "Hmmmm would that be thick enough to hold a hammock?"

The Park Manager for Sebastian Inlet is a friend...I'll see if he has received the memo (tho he did say he was going on a trip; can't remember when).
