I was thinking of doing the same. I want to go camping at Torreya May 12 and I may offer to show them my rig and how it works. Talk a little about what is needed to hang a hammock. etc (not that I am an expert) If anyone wants to join, let me know.

    Thanks,

All Florida hangers, google Senator Paula Dockery and send her a thank you e-mail. Looks like this was just mouldering in the government bureaucracy until she started the ball rolling. And again thank you Dave for bring this to her attention. It will also be up to us to help the uninformed and make this work.

Thought I'd share some news. My local guy did some research and got a response back from Tallahassee. I'm now in contact with someone with the Bureau of Operational Services which seems to be the group managing the pilot program. He said they're still working out the details but he's looking forward to helping hammock users camp.

I may try to do a modified version of the hammock presentation I just did for our Florida Trail chapter and will certainly make myself available to answer any questions he has.

    Was it this guy?
For the duration of the pilot program, hammock camping user groups will be advised to contact Mr. Philip Madden in the Division’s Bureau of Operation Services. He may be reached at 850 245-3076 or by email at [email protected]. Mr. Madden will serve as liaison between the users and park management of any park receiving hammock camping requests.

Just thought I would update folks after talking to the Torreya State Park Manager and share what he told me. They are still in the planning stages and he stated that they have a conf call tomorrow to discuss the hammock camping trial program but nothing else has been decided. While that may seem slow to us this is actually pretty fast movement for a state agency to be honest.

I then offered to come out and show him my rig which meets the requirements that have been posted here. (I have no idea if they have changed since then.) He was real interested in having me come out and show his staff my setup and talk with them about hammock camping. (Of course I am still a noob to all this so I may be looking for some more experienced volunteers if anyone is willing to help out in educating the park staff.) I left him my contact info and told him I would be happy to come out when ever he wanted.

All in all it was a positive conversation and he seem interested in hearing what I had to say. I would encourage anyone who is interested in camping in a FL State Park to reach out now to the park managers and offer to do the same. I may contact a few of the other state parks in the panhandle area after this as well.

    Thanks,
