I think the thing to remember is that we are in phase I of a hammock trial. If things go well (and we as a group are as much responsible for that as DEP) and we help educate them... then who knows where it might lead. Either way we are better off than we were before

You're awesome Dave. Thank so much for doing that and now I have something else to look forward to when I go back home to West Palm Beach. Thanks again!

Can you please edit your first post to have the entire letter there. This makes me so happy that there are some open minds in Florida working on this. The test will prove so many good things for hammock users, I feel confident this will stick!

The designated tree thing looks pretty broad spectrum...
[QUOTE] "In general, trees should be hardwood or pine, a minimum of 6” diameter at breast height, and be spaced approximately 10’ to 15’ apart".
That's about what I look for in a hanging spot! The straps on the tarp ridge line will be easy enough to fashion too and will be good for the trees.

It probably wouldn't hurt to reach out the parks in our areas and be proactive in working with them.

As for polls in the camp grounds, I have visions of someone in their Winnebago backing over my hammock at 3 in the morning. (actually had that almost happen at Ochlockonee a few years ago)

Great news Samsara! And thank you for "nudging" them along! Now I gotta figure out the tarp situation, I was thinking about using slides on the tree straps and attaching a small piece of shock cord from the slides to my zing-it ridgeline.

Edit: Just found these Heavy Ladder Locks that might do the trick, I'll see how they perform out in the field.

For the tree straps, why not do the double-ended tree hugger with loop? Take the tree hugger, run it around the tree, feed it back through itself (or use a 'biner or some Dutchware), and clip or tie the CRL to the exposed loop.

Easy-peasy. Let's you adjust the tarp via CRL regardless of how it's attached to the trees.

While many have pointed out the potential conflict between hammocks affixed to trees and F.A.C. Rule 62D-2, the purpose of the rule is to prevent negative impacts on natural resources.
Wow, just when I had about lost all faith in government to understand why they have specific laws in the first place, and then I saw your post. That is excellent news, so that rule is not designed to prevent attachments to a tree per say, but only to protect the tree from negative attachments that may harm the tree. Mark one up for rational decision making.

Now I can stop avoiding State Parks. I will have to visit a state park in the future and inquire as to where I can setup my hammock.
