Newbie Near Dallas

Lake Mineral Wells State Park, west of the metroplex, is a nice area. It has been several years since I was last there, but at the time it was very enjoyable. A rock climbing area is available. Palo Duro Canyon, The Grand Canyon of Texas, is a possibility to the north, although the hanging may be problematic in the area. I’m not sure if the trees in the area are substantial enough to support a hammock. During the summer you should be able to do some amazing star gazing from down in the canyon.

There are a few places with 2 to 2 1/2 hours of Dallas to hang.

1. Cross Timber Trail. Very nice to hike. Called the Toughest Little Trail in Texas about 17 miles of up and down. Not a state park. Maintained by Army Corp of Engineers. My personal fav.

2. Dinosaur valley state park. Nice Hiking good elevation changes for Texas.

3. The above mentioned Lake Mineral wells state park. Nice trails.

For DFW hanging within 1 hour drive of town check out Cedar Hill SP, Bonham SP, Purtis Creek SP and some others. Tyler SP is a nice place but if you choose Cedar Hill, you can hike a couple of the trails for a total of 4-5 miles and camp in primitive camping areas. I also am new to hanging in a WBBB and love it.

We may need to plan a DFW Hang 2012 this fall. It's the best way to check out equipment.

One thing to note about Cedar Hill SP you will be hard pressed to get a spot in the primitive area. They are all ways booked solid as its to close to Dallas. The sites there are not that primitive. But my idea of primitive is different than most.

I'm in for a DFW Hang can't wait!

I am surprised at how many dallas hangers there are!!! My brother(Netmonster) and I have wanted to try and get a group together but had not seen much activity from the area as far as hangers are concerned. Now that I see we have a few I think we should really try and pull something together at Cross Timber Trails this fall. One thing to note about cedar hill S.P. is that it is really hard to get a primitive campsite, so much so that i have yet to actually hang there! With that said welcome and I look forward to actually meeting all of you fellow hangers.

Rv resort is a good place for having fun with family. There are many more camping areas all around Dallas. It is such a beautiful place for thrill and adventure.

Been a while since I looked in on the forum, but welcome to hanging! Cedar Hill SP is just 15 minutes from us, so we occasionally drop in there. Our personal favorite park when we hammock camp is Meridian -- it's just far enough out that it's usually not booked solid, although we've also camped at Cleburne. We've hiked in Dinosaur Valley and Mineral Wells, but haven't had the chance to camp there yet -- all of them are beautiful parks.

I do have a Blackbird and a Hennessy that I'm happy to demonstrate at Cedar Hill, since it's so conveniently close to me, and I can go on for hours about knots, underquilts, tarps, etc
