    Closed cell for UQ

I have noticed a thin closed foam blanket the water company uses in the meter boxes. It gets well below freezing during winter here. It is light and I was thinking of making a summer UQ with it. Does anyone know if this has been tried or talked about in the past?

shoot try it out, is it kinda like those blanket pad thing they put in the back of Uhauls for padding furniture? Might be ok for down to 50.

    Like a thin blanket

It is closed cell foam although it is only around 1/16 thick. I am going to try to get some today and I will post a pic later.

I stuck a layer of that inside of my PLUQ and it really helped with the wind. I had a large rectangle about the size of the folded poncho liner that I slipped inside, i had to make a slit in the ends where the liner was cinched up. right in the middle of the rectangle I made a straight cut about a 1/4th of the length of the foam and then let the cut ends overlap. One note the stuff is not breathable and can cause some condensation.

One thing that I have found that will help is to take two walmart closed cell foam pads and a emergency blanket. take the emergency blanket and place it sandwich in-between the two walmart pads, duct tape the edges together. This will work well if you have a tight budget.

    foam underquilt

I tried working with an 1/8 inch thin foam insert into my underquilt, hoping to boost it's rating. I found it left small gaps where cold air came in. It didn't pull as snug under me as the quilt, because the foam doesn't fold like cloth does with the shock cord channels. I'm sure with some intelligent design it can be done. Essentially insultex is a very thin foam that is used like cloth to make an underquilt.

    Working it up now

I am working it up now. The pro's so far is it is very light weight. Con's are it is not very compressible. I am not worried about compression as I have strapped many items on the outside of my packs before. I am intrigued by its insulation properties, waterproofness and most of all ultralight weight. I am planning to post some pic's this weeks of the build when it is done.

A couple years back, we talked about thin ccfoams, such as hardwood floor liner, etc. same issues, not compressible, had to create multiple layers with an air space, like insultex, vapor barrier, etc.

    Done

Ok I finished it and will try to post pics tomorrow. Just doing some adjustments. The big issue is I will need to strap it outside and under my pack old school style. This has been interesting to work with and I think it is an affordable pad solution if nothing else.

Lookup Insultex. It's similar foam, less than 1mm thick, and quilted between spun poly scrim to give it strength.

I've used a small piece of similar foam to reduce my CBS, which I get quite readily...
