    Father/daughter

My daughter who is 7 has expressed an interest in hammocking when we go camping and I would enjoy her company on backpacking trips. I am looking for a suitable hammock set-up for her that she can grow into and it be rather economiocal. Also lookinf for suggestions on how to start her out hanging next to me over me. Any suggestions and help is greatly appreciated!!!

If you have access to a sewing machine or some one that sews, you could start her off in a DIY rig for relatively cheap before dropping a boat load on something she may or may not really enjoy. This is what I did with my girls. you can put together a DIY single layer for VERY VERY CHEAP.

    Shawn,

You can get her a Scout Zip for about a $100 including a small fly from Hennessy. It's not Asym like their others.

Last Christmas they were giving away an Asym version called the Cub for younger hangers when you bought another hammock. You may consider posting in the Want To Buy area to see if anyone has one sitting around unused?

I'm trying to get my 3 1/2 and 5 year old kids off the ground as well. Check out dejohas book "The Ultimate Hang" or other threads here on double hanging.

I hope you are enjoying the Monsoon!

...or if you can't do a DIY, I've picked up a GTUL as cheap as $13 on Amazon.

I agree, a GTUL would be good, and they are very reasonably priced. I have one and love it. If your daughter ends up not liking it, you have a nice extra hammock.
I think she will love it though...

Great age to get some father/daughter camping time. 2sticks (daughter) and I started off with trips that were only a short hike and worked up to trips over several days. I have found that staying under the same tarp is preferred and you can hang closer than you might think. You can check out some of our videos to see setups that have worked for us.

They grow up fast so get them out while they are still interested in going with Dad They grow up fast!

I have lots of family in SE VA and there no shortage of place to get out and hang.

I agree with chickenwing it would be best to DIY, this is the cheapest and most efficient thing to do. For less than 50$ you can make a really nice hammock.

Me and my 10 year old son are sleeping out in the back yard tonight. We are gonna try to have both hammocks under one tarp...just as an experiment. The real test is of his insulation. Next weekend we are camping out for the Eco-endurance challenge. With that event, they block off the roads for the duration of the even so if we are cold the only option is to sit by the fire. I will try and get some pics today of our setup.

I hang with my 11yr old daughter. We just try and set up close to each other and set up the tarps in porch mode so she can look out and see me.
