    DIY trees

My lovely wife has given me permission to put 3 large poles in our back lawn to allow me to hammock from, on the proviso that we also attach a shade sail to said poles.

I'm looking at getting 3, 4.2 metre variable width poles (200-225mm), H4 treated.

I'm looking at digging 1.2/1.5m so that I have 3/2.7m exposed and concreting them in. They will be spaced approximately 5.5 metres apart (the shade sail is triangular and 5mx5mx5m).

Does anyone have any suggestions or done anything similar?

Photos of the backyard and progress will come soon.

    Cheers,

    Jason.

i don't have the room to install something like this, but it would be myown choice! i remember watching a viedo clip made by "sail-rite" about making a triangle sun shade(if you do a search you'll probably find it along with others- worth a look even if you arn't going to do the work). i don't know what the conditions are like in your local, but if wind is a problem , i'd consider the use of open weave mat'l (sort of like noseem only a larger openings- i think at some point i've heard it reffered to as" trampolene mat'l")- this would allow some light thru but will reduce the sailing qualaties of the shade. it sounds like a good project- i'd wish you "good luck" but as you already know- it's not luck at all

Thanks for your reply waldo, it's appreciated. I've taken a look at that video, very helpful!

No one else has put posts or poles up in their yards and can give any advice?

I would have spoke up when you originally posted if I didn't think your plan was good.

I have not planted poles in my yard, but with 25 years of commercial construction experience, I am confident your proposed plan will work very well. I wouldn't space the poles any farther apart though, due to the height required for the "tree straps".

I've always liked the looks of this finished one and if I had the space, this is what I'd do. http://theindecisivelife.blogspot.co...-out-pt-2.html

My old mate Browny popped around today and along with my dad, gave me a hand to get my DIY trees up.

I got 3, 4.2 metre (13.77 feet), 200-225mm (7.87-8.85 inch) CCA treated pine posts. Dug 3, 1.3 metre (4.26 feet) holes. Put some blue metal stone down the holes. Put in the posts, put in a heap of rapid set concrete and BAM, DIY trees.

Getting ready to put the posts in the holes.

    Hammocking nirvana.

    The hard workers.

I'm going to leave them a week before I hang from them and will post an update next weekend

Many thanks to Browny for his help.
