Work has me hung up and maybe in the next week or 10 days can decide. One question..what is the shortest 2' x 2's for the tripods has anybody used? Might have to go the aluminum tent poles to get them in the car. 5' 6" is the poles for our Alamosa Stands.
One guy had a set that was like 4'... Really it just depends how low you want to go... If you don't mind being 2" off the floor, then that your minimum... But if you want a full 18" of sit height... Then you obviously need 18" more...

Start at 6', then hang hammock and keep cutting until your as short as you want or as low as your willing to go...

Yep, like Brute said. I think 6' is the shortest I've done but I don't need it to be short as much as I want to be at a comfortable sitting height. Start there or thereabouts and shorten as you can tolerate.

If you have a longer ridge pole than the standard 10', you might get away with shorter poles just by tightening up the hangle a touch.

If you look at Turtlelady's stand, the poles are just 5'6" with a 10' ridge pole. She's pretty close to the ground but as long as your knees can handle it and you're not in the rain getting splashed up on, go as low as you like!

When I get a chance,,as work as me all tied up right now setting trade shows one after another,,,I want to measure my trunk with back seats down of my car, and see what I can get away with for cross country tripping this summer. I already have a couple of Alamosa stands with boom stakes, but like the rigging of TD Stand in sand or rock situations. I have some telescopic aluminum that we use for hanging signs, drapery and background stuff that holds several hundreds of pounds, and telescopic rods from 3' out to 22' in various lengths I think I will play around with and see what I can put together when I get time in the next week or 2 and will post pics of lashing this high dollar stuff together. Might be able to slap acouple of stands together for me and the wife at no cost with all the amsteel I have for the alamosa stand available, (200' of 1/8") and with the boom stakes for backup its all doable. Just need the time to do it and post some pics and hang in it and will in the next couple of weeks. Thanks for all the ideas from everybody in this posting and pics.

I made two turtlelady style stands, one sixe foot poles and the second five foot pulls. Each use a ten foot cross bar. Dependinding on your hammock you may be able to use a shorter cross bar thus allowing you to stay higher off the ground

I don't mind. My friend was in the tent. This was his first exposure to hammock camping. He's still skeptical, but I'll break him!

    My TurtleDog Stand!

I used the instructions from hppyfngy's sig (thanks hppyfngy!). I had to slightly enlarge the hole for the shackle because I used the galvanized instead of the stainless due to double the rated load. As you can see, I have a tripled-up loop of paracord suspending my top rail.
I have it setup so I can lash half of the top pole into each tripod to carry as a unit. Also, I have a paracord loop at the bottom of each leg for a tent stake, and carry my six tent stakes inside one of my metal poles with a cap at each end. I am preparing to put a rope handle on each tripod. I was shooting for something I can easily carry around that didn't have a lot of loose components. I also wanted something I can setup at the campground and leave setup without worrying excessively about the wind claiming my equipment.

Since I took the time to set it up, I also took the time to enjoy it after setting it up!
