Something I have noticed Is that some toprails flex upwards, some down and some neutral. I'm thinking that it is dependant on where your hammock attachment and toprail suspensions are located. My hammock attachments are on the ends of the TR and the TR suspension are 6" to 8" inboard of the ends and the TR flexs slightly upward. Something like drawing a bow. Find that neutral point and richtorfla's suggestion should work with the hinge and barrel bolt. The sleeve sounds like a workable solution also. Like rich my physics and engineering are limited also. Have had a few experiences with gravity since hanging though!

Another good looking stand mys4sllc. These are popping up almost daily!

This is basically what I was thinking only opposite sides. I could be wrong and probably am but I would put the hinge on top. Beauty of this idea is you can always flip it to find out which is better. I had been considering this idea as it is super cheap. A cam lock like what is on a window may be a better option. Not sure how a barrel bolt is going to stop the wood from separating. I do like your thinking though.

Problem is the forces change from loaded to unloaded hammock. Not that your thought won't work though. A good twirl around the hardware store is called for.

I don't think I've ever seen a window cam lock that would fit on a 2x2 though. Maybe a hasp of some kind?

I love this stand! Not too expensive, sturdy, and easy to put together! We went to the Big Orange Store (tm) and picked up the 2x2s, hinges, nuts and bolts, shackles, etc....and I spent Saturday morning putting them together. Had a friend over for some games in the afternoon, and then took the stand on its first outing!

I added a pair of headphones to tune to the FM simulcast of the audio....and I had the best seat in the Drive-In!

Several people commented on it, and one guy in particular came over and we talked about hammock camping in general, so I pointed him to the forum -- maybe we'll gain another convert! My only minor issue was that the wind picked up toward the middle of the second movie, so I was getting a little chilled...next time, I won't forget a blanket

It is great to see these stands used in fun locations, and the happy smiles of the occupants. : ) TurtleLady

I was in Home Depot today and saw 2x3's that cost less than the untreated 2x2's AND they were much straighter and in better condition. I don't know if this was just a one time deal but they might not add too much more weight, should fit fine into this stand, and might add a bit more strength for those wanting a bit more oomph in their stand.
