Pics of mine will come later today. Unfortunately, I don't have a shot of my nephew's as I delivered his Wednesday night (it was a last minute, rush job add to his overall birthday gift). Now he has the means to hang last year's Christmas present (an ENO SN modded with whoopies with tree straps) wherever he wants. YAY!!

    Cool Beans, Kayt! Pics please...

I have some tweaks and painting to do, but it's functional!

    You? Limited? Never!

Looks great and the yard too! What's your top rail? It's a long one!

I will most likely have my TD stands at the Smoked Butt hang April 19-21. Not planning on using them but will have them in the truck if needed.

One of the afore mentioned tweaks I need to do. Currently, it's galvanized pipe -- 3 sections at 4' each. I'm not too worried about it failing on me since I only weigh 145 lbs, but I would rather do the fence post top rail. I had the galv'pipe already and it will do the job for me until I get over to HD.

It was a fun, easy project. I'm planning my next one already!

It would hurt less than galvanized if it fell on you...

    Good stuff.

Talldaddy, did you use fence top rail for your top rail? Also I would be interested in how long? This is exactly what I had considered for scout trips. dave

Don't forget that an "11 foot hammock" is talking about when it is stretched straight. When you are using it the sag shortens it quite a bit. I think the topic has been covered a bit already but it seems like somewhere between 10-12 feet should be plenty (but I can't really remember).

You should be able to set up your hammock (using trees), fine tune it so that it is exactly how you want it in the TD stand, and then make some measurements.
    • Give yourself at least 6 inches beyond each end of your hammock and measure the distance between the two. This will give you the actual distance between your hang points. You will probably want a bit more toprail on each end... six inches maybe? (hppyfnygy... help me here )
    • Measure the height of your theoretical "attachment points". Will that work, can you live with your hammock being a bit shorter, will your stands get you that high? This will be the level that you will want to try to get your toprail.

Now you should have something to work with... at least until somebody that knows more than me (it's too long of a list to type out ) corrects the errors of my advice. Either way I would shade towards keeping the toprail longer and your two tripods as high as possible. You can always shave some more off but you can't add more on if you went too far
