All very good ideas. I like them all.

My raw materials are waiting for me to make a stand. I want to have my name on the TDS list for posterity with the rest of ya'll.

Just completed mine today....slight learning curve being a noob and all....starter hammock and starter stand, all is good. Had to cut the length to seven feet, and the toprail is fifteen. Test hung in it, and my son had to try it after he got home from school. I'll be building another next week for his hammock. Have a feeling that when the scouts see this they'll all want one. Will continue to tweek it till i get it right.

Awesome! I always want to scootch the stands over to where they're over soil instead of concrete, but

    Nice!

I reckon I'm gonna have to build myself a TDS.
What is the consensus on top rail material and what length top rail for a hammock with a SRL of 108"?

    Unhappy

Complete failure...... I am the scoutmaster for our local BSA Troop and I attended our Spring Camporee this weekend. My plan was to use my newly constructed Stand and enjoy my hammock because I vowed to never sleep in a tent again. So heres what happened please evaluate and help me fix this. I constructed it just like the majority in this thread. The top rail is 1 3\8" chainlink fence top rail. One cut at 7' 3" (including the factory compressed connection point) and then one cut to 7'. So when assembled it is 14'. I used the endcaps with the loop formed into it and attached my whoopie slings to that. Hung the hammock and slowly crawled in. The pole started to bow up at the connection and then completely failed with me ending up on the ground.....

What do you suggest I do to remedy this problem, I want to hang without trees...

    Thanks

BTW I ended up sleeping in my 2 man tent and my back is really PI$$ED at me today.....

um, why such a long top rail? Most of us are using one prefab section of 10 foot rail I believe, just cut in half so the swaged end will mate in the middle. my guess is that the extra four feet of rail compromises the system's rigidity too much.

Pics? If your connector pole bowed up, the whoopie slings had to be pulling down hard, maybe attached to far out towards the end? Pics would help.
