Chain link top rail. Tell Lowe's guy that and he should know. It keeps you from collapsing the tripods.

    quick links

A vote here for quick links over "S" hooks. Stronger and much less weight than "S" hooks. And they will fit through the hinge.

Still would love to know the weight of one of these stands...If anybody gets a chance, jump on your bathroom scale with one of these stands in your hands and see what they weigh..Would be much appreciated...

Dude, bring your scale by the house someday. I have stands, but no scale ...

Or maybe a weight conscious hanger will verify.

I'm noticing that the 2x2's people are using are pressure treated? Or is it the funky color from the camera? Are the pressure treated 2x2's any "stronger"? I'm 6' 2", 290lbs and wondering if I should go with 2x2's or 2x3's...thoughts?? Oh and my ridge pole will be 14' for tarp use...

I was wondering what size & gauge chainlink toprail was being used by the majority? I used to build fences and I know how easy the 1 3/8" folds under weight unless it's thicker gauge than what is standard on 4' chainlink fence.

Lowes doesn't seem to have many options in gauge for either size, so I'm assuming people are purchasing the 1 5/8" 16ga? I wish I could still get my hands on some schedule 40 1 38" pipe. It's heavy but stout!

I used 2x3's because the 2x2s I had access to were very knotty and crooked. I have used stands made by others from 2x2's and they are strong. Weight isn't the primary consideration, as you usually don't have far to carry them.
14 ft. on the top rail will let you put about any tarp up there. Maybe just me, but I don't drape my tarp over the rail because I fear damaging it. I just hang it under the rail.
Hope you enjoy using the TDS as much as I do.
