I think mine are 6 foot poles with a 10 foot cross bar. My cross bar is steel pipe from lowes that was cut in half and then turned inward with a connector to screw the pieces into one another.

Next idea ... Zip tie some rubber from an old motorcycle tire tube to the bottom of each leg. That might just do the trick.

Well plastidip will work too and would be a little more elegant, but hey! Use what you have if you have it! I'm all for re purposing.

Here's another. Stained pine and painted rail for the nephew. (He's stylish...)

    (pardon the remodeling)

Here's how you get an 1-1/4" rubber tip onto a 1-1/2" leg.

I had an incident at the cataloochee campground in great smoky mtns np last weekend with some unreasonable camp hosts. I ended up hanging from a questionably small tree in order to hang over the tent pad. I think I need a stand. These stands look good but I can't figure out 1) how long of a top pole I'll need (WBBB and Maccat Standard) and 2) how the halves of the top pole fit together.

    How about some insight?

That's the reason I avoid campgrounds.
But having a stand certainly broadens your options.

Mundele--My hammock is a WBBB and any top pole over 12 ft would work, including the tarp. Top pole sections are mostly of chain link top rail which has a built in coupling, where one end is reduced to fit inside the other end.

Your tarp is ~10'-6" long so 12'+ on the top pole. As mentioned, most are using a section of top rail made for chain link fencing. Most are cutting it in half for portability and using the built in connector to join the halves in use.

    Connecting Top Rail

I found Stu's Amsteel loops ideal for connecting the rail to the shackle.
