Your not stupid, just cautious.
The strength for the use of 2x2's is achieved by distributing the vertical(downward) force to each of the legs. By themselves, they wouldn't be strong enough to hold the horizontal force(pulling together) applied by the hammock usually held by medium to large trees.
Think of hanging on small diameter trees. They would not hold the force unless you put extra straps holding to the next small tree.
By turning the tripods, I'm assuming your trying to put the legs on the inside(towards) the hammock. That would leave all the horizontal force on just 1 leg on each side. Yikes.
That's where the bar comes in to play. By hanging the hammock to the bar, it changes the horizontal force to vertical force. The bar takes the squeeze, if you will, and the bar(and all attached) hangs from the tripods, downwards.
Just make sure the hammock attachment is inline with the bar attachment, not to the inside, or outside of it.
