Is it better to have the line that keeps the legs from walking in the middle of the legs or at the bottom? or does it even matter?
HPPYFNGY Posts (1973 example) has a link at the bottom to the method I used that cuts the top of the 2X2s at an angle - No string required. If you look at the picture in the next post (1974) the angle cut was not used - thus the string is required to maintain proper leg separation. No string = ground friction is the only thing holding legs.
You can see how the top fits together on this photo:

Lower is better strength wise, but unless it is set up on a hard slick surface it won't walk. Try it on the grass or dirt, with a load on it, it takes major effort to make one of the legs walk, I put lines on my first one but removed them when it became apparent that they were only in the way.
If you prepare for failure you will probably succeed.

I used a piece of 1" conduit tubing for my bar. Is there a way break down the bar(into 2 or 4 pieces) and (reliably and safely) put it back together for transport? I have been looking into possible even putting hinges on the wood with a slide lock(something like rebar) to make this fit in my trunk.

The turtledog and turtlelady dog stands have been around a while now. Long enough for mass experimentation.
What is the lightest and cheapest configuration for a portable hammock stand?

I am looking at making ten of these for nieces and nephews along with canvas carrying sacks.

Thanks for the link to the weight. I used HppyFNG's length and Oldpappys weight specs (pg 141) to compare with NEC 1/2" EMT tubing, comparing oz per in.
Not much to gain by going to tubing. reduction is less than a 1/2 lb over the project, although lashing vice hinges would reduce it a further 2.2 lbs (amazon weight), even more once you dropped the required hardware. but still not much of a difference.

I agree - I think if you are going to mass produce I'd set-up for the TD stand. The TL lashings might be harder for your gang to maintain than nuts and bolts of the TD. No matter what if you rough house, don't put it up right, or leave an empty hammock up during windy conditions it will fall on you. Staking it down would help.
P.S. The hardest part will be finding enough good 2X2s.

Oldpappy, I don't recall ever building one for that little money. Could have sworn all mine came in between $50 and $60, but it's been a while.

And yes the 2x's are the tricky bit. I really suggest going to a proper lumber yard for them. I get mine from a local lumber yard and can just grab from the stack of good 2x2's and never get a bad one. ymmv
