Great, now I have another project.

I'm a big boy. figure 315 lbs so I'm thinking thicker wood for my stand. I do have access to some seriously sweet oak planks....

I may need to do some gluing to get the lumber I want, but if I got persnickety, I could figure on 2.5" or so oak with a turned bottom to fit a large cane tip.

This is where the amateur engineer speaks from his backside. Basically the same way I put the first TD together. Load is spread out through all the components. Thus 157 1/2 lbs. per tripod spread over the 3 legs of each is 52.5 lb. loading per leg. Doesn't really sound like much does it? Kinda the way my mental engineering was going at the time and I didn't even do this much math at the time. If the Turtlelady could hang off of bamboo surely 2x2's would hold my behind. If your TD was built out of 2x2's I believe it would be capable but don't take that as a guarantee. Select the clearest, knot free, and straightest lumber you can find.

+1 on knot free. I speak from a sudden crashing experience.

+2 on knot free and straight grained. I've seen as much as 450# in one of my stands, (made of 2x2's,) with no strain or problems.

Maybe prudent to overbuild, but I'm with olddog. I don't really think it's necessary.

    But it's your butt!

    Hello all,

Here is an idea. . . I am thinking about how to hang two hammocks from one set of support legs (with the TDS stand, for two hammocks I would need two sets of support legs)

    I found these:

    http://www.ebay.com/itm/SAWHORSES-NE...item4aa8556748

Home Depot seems to have the best price for them but the guy on ebay has the best pictures.

It looks like they could easily support the weight of two people. It looks like you can make them as tall as you want and as wide as you want. I bet they would be rock solid. . . I'm still thinking about.

Can anybody tell me why this might be a bad idea?

Or perhaps somebody here has already tried it?

"two hammocks from one set of support legs"

I think the sawhorse hardware might be overkill and possibly not the best choice. For one thing, you're going to have to disassemble it to transport it anywhere. For another, that hardware is a lot more expensive than a gate hinge.

I think if I were going to do this, I'd build out the 3 stands with one of them (the hub) built with 2x4s instead of 2x2s OR simply build 2 sets of stands and put them side-by-side.

One of the allures of the conventional turtledog stand is that it's cheap and easy to build. Mine took all of maybe 30 minutes to build. I probably spent more time in the hw store buying the material than I did building it.

On the other hand, if you're the likes-to-experiment type, there are worse ways to spend your time. :-)

Mine was made with pressure treated 2x2's. Like the other posts have stated, you will have to carefully examine each piece for potential structural weaknesses i.e. knots in the wood. Mine held up fine at the hang with the exception of the stands mortal enemy, the wind!! Mine fell over when I was at the group dinner.
