We have very expensive bamboo around here, so I googled 'Bamboo' and found lots of sites similar to this one: http://www.backyardxscapes.com/bambo...pole_color=119.

So I guess I could order some, but I am still trying other things. This morning I tried using one pole to support my weight, hanging between a tree and the pole. First I used an aluminum tube about 6' long, an inch in diameter with very thin wall. A tent pole??
Well, you just know it started to bend when it settled in slowly.

Next I tried a shower curtain rod. The kind that twist-adjusts from about 3 1/2 ft to about 6', or there abouts. That seemed to work fine until the plastic twist thing inside snapped. I think that tubing will hold extended but to me it seems like too loose a fit.

Still have to try the aluminum telescoping tubes I ordered, and have no doubt they will work fine, but I am trying to figure the lightest design.

Probably a version of this made with light weight materials.

Yes, exactly, I have been following that thread and it looks like I may be able to use 1 1/2 OD tubing as the outer tube and 1 3/8 as the middle one. each 3 feet long.
Wow! You can sure learn a lot here!

    Easy Peezy

I had the tree stakes and 9' of steel xtc gas pipe left over from a landscape job. After stringing it up I hung the biner from my eno hammock directly in the end of the pipe. Works like a charm. 8)

I was given a wonderful father's day gift today. I was able to give my daughter her birthday gift a couple of weeks late. It was a big mayan hammock. She always loved mine so I told her I would order one for her.

    Then it happened...

She said she wanted some way to sleep in it every night because the bed she has is very uncomfortable (she is living in a work related house for her summer internship). I said... do you want me to build you a stand? She said "YESSSSSSSSSSSSSS!!!!"

I'm going to build the TurtleDog 2.0 with the hppyfngy angled tops and I'm going to attempt the top mounting of the pipe. I promised I would finish it this week and we would dial it in on Sunday.

Pics to follow once I'm done!!

    That thing is so cool.

I ordered one of these in aluminum and one of these and they arrived today. The price wouldn't be bad if you could pick them up at the store in PA., but the shipping is horrible.

A few minutes of lashing produced this...

    Attachment 36497

A few more minutes of slipping the ends together and I had this...

    Attachment 36498

Broken down and in the bag...

    Attachment 36499

The weight without the bag is about 32 lbs. Each of the fifteen 4' pieces is 2.2 lbs.

This was quickly thrown together and the hang needs refining. For me, the legs need shortened or another 4' section (there are 3 left over) could be added to the ridgepole to allow me to get a proper hang angle while maintaining the correct sitting height.

The pieces slip together easily with no slop. I STRONGLY recommend drilling and pinning the joints so you can move it around (set it up) without the pieces falling apart.

I had high hopes when I ordered these and my expectations were met.
Im confused. Did you buy the pole sections or the kit on the link? That has all the makings for a beach hang! Nice work!!

Man, very tempting but shipping is $60 or so for me. I suspect the company dislikes shipping large objects! I'm spoiled with Amazon prime.

I still might try my hinged 2x2 design. Will be a few weeks before I can get to it.

Please keep the portability mods coming!

Groovy...Nice work on the stand. I can't see clearly in the photo how you did your lashing, but I do mine like this. It's strong and lets the tripod fold up nicely if needed.

Thanks. I used both the "kit" with the bag and the six section set to have enough sections (see post #212). There are 2-3 sections left over depending on how long you make the ridgepole.

The stand posted in this thread has a 12' ridgepole and in the turtlelady thread post #613, it is shown with a 16' ridgepole.

    Clear as mud yet?
