Would 1.5" diameter PVC be sufficient for the cross bar? Or 1.75" or 2"?

My 1" galvanized steel flexes, I wouldn't use PVC. Alloy tube of about 2" would be my limit.

Does durability of the hinges seem to matter? Should they be heavy duty and does material matter (zinc, steel, ect)?

I used stainless steel hinges. I don't know about zinc. I use my stand indoors for the most part so it didn't really make a big difference there.

Look for the hinges with 3 holes in the rectangular half not 4.

Finally finished making a turtle dog stand. Neighbor was wondering why I was making a stand when I live in the woods. I had to explain to her that some places we go to don't have an abundance of trees like we do. Thanks Olddog for the answers to my questions.

    Straight out of Clayton.

Most physical hike: Grandfather Mountain, NC. Aug 13.

I don't need to make my pack lighter. I need to make my (_*_) lighter.

I just finished my first TurtleDog stand. I read every single page of this thread and loved it. We recently had to cut down one of the only trees we could use for a hammock in the back yard. This design saved my bacon.

Thank you to everyone who contributed but especially olddog, turtlelady and hppyfngy.

This is a 6'5" 264# man hanging in a Yukon OUtfitter hammock. The parts are all as described in previous posts except that I had to spend twice as much for the tripod legs to get anything resembling knot clear and straight grained. I still need to get the tripod leg length and spread the way I want it then I'm going to put in some kind of shelf (fabric) between the legs as spread limiters.

My spreader bar is not cut as this will live in my back yard or the garage. I used 550 paracord to hang the spreader bar.
