12-15" is on the low side, but it is high enough for my backyard use. Also, my goal with the stand was to make it as compact as I could. When hanging from trees on the trail, I would shoot for something more like 18" off the ground.

Here is how I worked out the top rail height for my stand. My hammock is 98" along the ridgeline. My suspension points on the rail are 136" apart (this distance is dictated by the length of my tarp). Therefore, the horizontal distance along the rail from the suspension point to the end of the hammock is (136" - 98") / 2 = 19". When the hammock is hung at a 30 degree sag, the vertical gap between the rail and the hammock ridgeline should be 19 / sqrt(3) = 11". In practice, I am getting something closer to 12" of drop from the rail, which suggests that either (a) the effective length of my hammock is a bit shorter that the nominal length of my structural ridgeline, or (b) the sag angle of my hammock is greater than 30 degrees. The distance from my hammock ridgeline to the bottom of the hammock, when I am sitting in the hammock, is around 32". So to get 15" of clearance under the hammock, I need the top rail to be around 5' off the ground (15" + 32" + 12" = 59").

Count me in! I just finished yesterday evening and gave it a quick test hang. I used a 13' bar and 6'6" tripod legs because I use an 8x10' tarp.

Datahiker, great job, I am adding a bit of length to my top rail as well because my hammock wants a little more room and I can't use my rain fly at the 10' I now have. When is your next one? These things work great in pairs for outdoor visits.

Aww heck. Now I'm gonna have to build one of these XL models for the yard.

I have plenty of trees but they're all too far apart!

    Off to Lowes.

Great Pics Datahiker, but I still don't get it. Why not put your pole sitting on top of the tripod? Has anyone tried this? Seems like you could still hang from the end caps. Just rotate 60 degrees from the setup in pic. Added advantage: tarp would go over tripod with a little smoothing of the wood
