I finished one this past week. Bought the materials Tuesday at lunch. Worked on it that night, and finished it last night. Fairly easy. Left the 2x2x8s 8 feet long. The shackles also don't fit in the holes for the gate hinge.

    Here are some pictures.

    Fun project. Thank you everyone.

I had to drill those out a little for mine.

    Looks good!

    Blame it on the weather!

I just read this entire thread because clear skies are predicted for tomorrow night's Perseid meteor shower, and for the first time I want to get out from under the trees. I better get busy ....

Yes, another benefit to having a stand. The good news for you is that buying the materials takes longer than building it

OK, pics or it didn't happen, so here they are. I still need to add a finish to them to protect it from the weather, not that I plan on leaving it outside for extended periods. I have two different colors of amsteel at the ends of my hammock, black and yellow. There are continuous loops on the hammock. Whoopies are connected to them using soft shackles. I did change the hinges to a larger size, as the ones I started with bent a little to easy. Using 5/16 bolts, I had to drill out all the hole for the bolts to fit. I also drilled the hole bigger for the shackle pin to fit. The basic design is the same as most. My biggest difference is that I used two stainless steel pins to hold the hammock to the outside of the continuous loops that hold the ridgepole to the tripods. The end caps are just an easy way to attach my tarp, for now. I may attach it using the rear 2x2 of the tripod, but I will have to anchor the tripod to do it. To anchor the tripod, I am thinking of a long line of amsteel with a locked Brummel loop on each end. I can then run the middle of the amsteel through the steel shackle and anchor on each side of the tripod. I was also thinking that maybe just a piece straight down to an anchor would also work, still attaching it to the shackle. As long as there is pressure holding the stand down, it shouldn't go anywhere, during windy conditions. Oh, and my spread limiter is a continuous loop of zing-it.
