So, you have two 6' sections of 1" EMT joined with a coupling and a section of 3/4" EMT inside to 1" tube to provide additional strength at the coupling point, correct? How long is the 3/4" section of EMT?

    Thanks!

Yes that is correct. The piece I use is about 3' but that is what I had laying around and didn't feel like cutting it, you could probably get by with shorter I just haven't tried yet.

After spending a little time on here reading I decided to stop by the store and pick up some supplies. Super easy setup. I ended up forgetting a few shackles and biners but I was determined to sleep in my hammock so I made it work.
I'll be picking up the rest of the pieces tonight so I can properly hang my ridgeline.
It was very stable too and didn't collapse until cleanup this morning. I was unhooking the hammock to put it up for the day, something got caught and I pretty much pulled it down as I walked away. User error.
Thank you for all the useful information.

Now I just need to find a way to keep my backside warm at night and I don't think I'll ever go back to my bed again. I'll probably be moving this into my room tonight now that it's been tested.

(I posted this also on the Turtlelady Bamboo thread.)

I came across an interesting joint set up for a tripod on a DIY tripod stool website. I was thinking it would work well here instead of lashing, which could slip on slippery poles.

Basically its bolting two poles together with an Eyebolt sandwiched in between which then is bolted to the third pole. The poles are free to swivel outward

My question is: What size bolt would one recommend to handle the shear forces downward?

Also suggestions for how to attach the crossbeam suspension?

I'm kind of in the, "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" group. The TurtleDog design uses the gate hinges for the tripods, not the lashing. I find this setup to be superior to the original lashing method which is a big reason I chose it. I also think the gate hinges would be far superior and sturdier to the eye-bolt/bolt idea. I would actually trust my lashing over the eye bolt setup.

The image you have posted seems questionable. For a general use tripod I think it would be fine, but not for something holding a significant amount of load, like a hammock. I picture that collapsing as soon as a real load is placed on it.

If you were to try it seems like it would be best to use a shackle or something between the 'eye' of the bolt and the dowel, then you could hang your pole (or whatever) off that. Also, I think you'd have to use a spreader and anti-spreader of some sort to hold the tripod upright.

Of course, that's just my opinion and I'd love to see how it turns out if you try it.

I finally had the opportunity to test my stand and new hammock. It worked great although my husband thought I was nuts for setting it up in the house and not sleeping in the comfy bed. Now I just need to work on getting comfy in the hammock.

I'm sorry I definitely wasn't trying to shut anyone's idea down.
Just don't think we could get much more stable that the gate hinge for the tripods. I mean, eventually, things have to hit a point where they just can't get any better than they are. I literally read hundreds, probably 250-300 pages yesterday full of different ideas. Many things still need a lot of refinement, but I'd say THESE tripods are about perfect. All the guess work is done and the method is tried and true. Choosing this design to follow was a no brainer based on everything I read.
I would love to see more ideas/pictures for simple suspension and things so I can start to tweak/perfect mine. I know at least 72 people have built one of these, but I didn't see pics of 72 stands.
    I need more pics!!!
    Please?
