The diagrams in this thread helped me a ton yesterday at Home Depot. I was able to measure my 2x2s and cut them right in the store. I took the top rail to the plumbing isle and had them cut it with the pipe cutters (nice clean cut).
This morning I stained it and painted the rail. The only thing I did different is I used chain to go from the hinge to the rail.
Last night was my first night in it and all went well..... as they say " cool beans"

I am finding I like the length of the legs to be 75" for the longer legs, and 72-1/4" for the shorter one.

You could make a pattern, but I just eyeball this kind of stuff. I did calculate the spread I thought I wanted originally, but now I just use these rough measurements.

For a 2x2 that's actually 1-1/2"x1-1/2", (typical size,) I go in 1/4" from the edge and down 4-1/2" for the pair of forward legs of the tripod, and in 1/4" and down 2-1/2" for the third leg.

So with the two legs lined up, I just lay the hinge on and align everything so I can see I am on center and the holes are centered on the legs. This works out best as I've ended up with different hinges each time...

Then once I have the two legs together I line up the third leg and mark it.

Once it's all bolted together it's a very sturdy system.

It definitely takes longer to cut the angles but I don't need any lines to limit the spread. Works for me!

Very good Randy! I've so got to get on the ball with this project. I've got my 2x4s ripped out, and have enough supplies to make at least 2 full set-ups...but just haven't taken the next step. Since I have a very long hammock, I get a bit confused on the height of the ends, and the length of the pole. I think that is the only thing stopping me from going further. (I've also not cut an angle for close to 20 years, so I'm a bit hesitant on that). As usual, I think I'm just over thinking and making it more difficult than it should be. Seems I do that with every project, and then when I'm done, I'm like "duh, that wasn't hard at all".

Now hammocks have come a long way, when we have to have a ridge pole, pocket pouch for a TV remote controller.... good thing they don't put knobs on TVs anymore..FYI,,, In the ole days we had
knobs and dials on a TV.

    Enough with the excuses.

One of the nice things about these stands is that they can easily be cut smaller after being built.

Make a stand with 7' legs and a 16' ridgepole so you know you're covered. Then you can cut any part of it smaller if you like.

You can also skip doing the angles (if that will trip you up) and rely solely on the spread limiting rope down on the legs. My original TD (look at the pics at the beginning of the thread) doesn't have angles, just spread limiting line, and I sleep in it every night.

Ok....thanks for the friendly kick in the butt . I just love all of you!
I will do tomorrow with no angles, pictures to follow. First one will be my son's; however, if it pans out pretty well, then it'll be mine

I love this thread and have piced up the parts* and it comes to +/-$40, which is ok. Now the problem.
*doesn't include the fence rail. We don't seem to have that here in UK? I am trying to source scaffold pole which I suspect is going to be much heavier.
So are there any of you stand builders here in UK who have an alternative ridge pole? Or in the US who can suggest a workable alternative?
