    Re: The TurtleDog stand

Another question, just got done with my first set and notice every time I get in the 550 cord holding the top rail and where my hammock attaches slide inward which makes the back leg come in as well. Any issues of putting a bolt in front of the rope to keep it from sliding?

There are several ways to prevent this but you're right, the simplest is probably to just insert something to stop the sliding cordage.

On one of mine I just ground off the point of a 16p nail and put it through the rail. I like the cord the rail is hanging from on the inside, so it can't come off when I move the stand, and the hammock suspension on the outside as it's the one pulling inward.

Works great. You could do something more permanent, the nail could fall out...

    Re: The TurtleDog stand

Just drilled holes and inserted some pins I had then used clips so they don't fall out

    The TurtleDog stand

A simple way to prevent the sliding is to use a section of bicycle inner tube around the horizontal bar. Then hanging the bar with a continuous loop and the hammock suspension immediately outside of it. Single larks head for both. I have had no issue of slippage. The rubber allows the cords to dig in abit and remain secure.

When in doubt, overbuild I always say. I've built all of mine with pt 2x2. They're not inherently stronger but what I've found have been very clear of knots and I'm leaving some of them outside for periods of time so, pt for me. Now that I think about it, I haven't seen any that weren't treated in my lumber yard.

2x2 should hold you just fine assuming you get knot free straight grained ones. 2x3 would be stronger, certainly. It's your butt, you be the judge.

Lowes doesn't seem to have many options in gauge for either size, so I'm assuming people are purchasing the 1 5/8" 16ga? I wish I could still get my hands on some schedule 40 1 38" pipe. It's heavy but stout!
I've only bought the standard 1-3/8" off the shelf stuff. It's really under no crushing stress, or even bending stress if you do it right. I'd avoid a dinged one of course.

My 2x2s were not treated. But I did add some Thompson's water sealant on them. To keep the rope from sliding on the pole, I drilled holes and added stainless steel pins, the ones with the little ball on the end to keep them from falling out.....RR

    Add Another to the List

I spent the weekend with my son's scout troop at the district Camporee hanging from my new TuttleDog stand. I had not tested it at home so there were a few moments of concern about tipping over as I got settled in. No problems though. This was my second weekend with the WBBB. Only one other adult hanging (SMJerry on the HF). I still don't know how he managed to get his troop into an area with trees.

While talking with an adult from another troop on Sunday, he commented how nice it was going to be to sleep in a bed without lumps. It was fun telling him that I had evolved and didn't sleep on lumps.

The Turtledog at the Stoney Fest Whitewater festival this past weekend. I could have sold ten of them by the end of the weekend. Please note the Turtledogless hammocker setting up on the ground next door. He learned his lesson. It was solid as a rock even in some pretty steady winds. The tarp held everything down quite well.
