Hey guys I have a question if someone could help. How high should the ridge pole be. Im using a 10 foot ridge pole and I'm starting off with 7' 2x2 and then I will give it the appropriate angle to reach the hight. I am going to place the ridge pole as close to the top as I can.
Thanks in advance
Laz
This is a little of an experiment on your part. It has to do with the length of your hammock and the height of your stands. (and your own height, to some extent...)
Of course, ideally you want your seated position to be chair height.
If you do what many do and use cordage to hang, this is easily adjustable. Just checked my own stand's ridge poles and my 10'er is 58" and the 14'er is 60".
Hope that helps.
Some say I'm apathetic, but I don't care. - Randy
My experience is also that different length/styles of hammocks can benefit from different ridgepoles lengths and heights.
So....my way of setting up the tripods is to limit the base spread to 4' and hang the ridgepole from continuous loops that are long enough to set the pole at the lowest height I would ever want. You can wrap the loops around the pole to adjust it's height upward.
I have an eye bolt in the ridge pole and a quick link attaching the eye bolt to the hinge. At present I am using 2 quick links just to make setup a little easier. The last time I used the stands I realized I did not have to disconnect the ridge pole from the hinge. My ridge pole is 2 sections. One is appx. 5.5 ft and the other 6.5 ft. My stands are appx 6.5 ft. and the ridge pole just folds into the legs as one assy. Straps to the suv or rides in the truck just perfect.
2 quick links are not necessary. One will work just fine.
thanks guys just the info i needed
I built a stand this weekend and it is rock solid. The only thing that bothers me is the bow in the ridge pole. I am using eye bolts in fence poles and an s hook to attach to hinge. I am placing the hammock straps on the outside of eye bolt. Being new to hammocking I did not know how long I wanted the ridge pole so maybe started a little long?? at 16 feet. Is that why it bows so much? I have read some posts that say they have no bow but I think they were using maybe a 10 foot ridge.
thanks
There shouldn't be much bowing if the hammock straps are up against the outside of the eye bolts. The farther the hammock straps are from the eye bolts, the more bowing you will have. Typically, with a 16' ridgepole, I get just enough upward bowing for the pole to pick up it's own weight...it moves up about 2" from it's unloaded resting position.
Got photos?
Wow, I guessing about 8 inches down
