Long time lurker. First time poster. Well here is the result of my first try at the TDS. I used the top rail fence post. Everything else worked quite well. I went right back to Menards and picked up 13' of steel pipe (3/4 inch) two couplers and two tees for the ends. It flexes but doesn't bend. For reference I weigh 230 lbs. so be careful using top rail fence post if you are on the heavy side. I do wonder if the top rail I used was lower quality but I am happy with what I have now. Wow, NCC, that's a spectacular failure of the top rail. I know there are heavier hangers using these stands. I can't quite tell from your first pic, but from your later ones, you have your hammock hanging from farther "outboard" of the suspension hang points than I'd like to see. If you could hang your hammock directly from where the ridge pole is suspended, you'd eliminate that flex altogether.
Might want to peruse the thread a bit more to see what I mean.
I would really hate to see that steel pipe fail on you! That would leave more than an "ouchie."
Happy Hanging!

I'm confused as to why they all seem to have such a long ridge pole.
You don't need them as high either if the pole is shorter.
Is there something I just don't see or understand?
An 11' hammock only needs just under 10' of ridge pole if you attach at or near the gathered end.
The longer the ridge pole, the stronger it will need to be.
You are correct - my 11 ft hammock is just right with a 10 foot ridge pole. I think the longer ridge poles are to allow for tarp clearance.

Yep. My 11'+ hangs fine on the 10' pole, but my larger tarps are too long for it.
I have a longer ridge pole arrangement for the yard.

anyone know if 1.625-in x 72-in Uncoated 17-Gauge Galvanized Steel Chain-Link Fence Line Post
could work for the tripod part ?
or 2.375
kinda wanted to do a triangle and do two hammocks off each tripod ?
or square with 4 tripods hang 4 hammocks so wanted the legs to support quite a bit more

Hppyfngy thanks for the response. I believe what you are saying is that I should move the Prussick knot out toward the end of the horizontal pole. I plan to hang tonight. I will make that adjustment before I do.
What many have done is to find a way to keep the prusik from sliding, either by wrapping the pole with innertube, or by adding a stopper, like a thru-bolt, and then hanging the hammock right there here the prusik wraps the ridge pole.
But yes, moving the prusik out as near the end of the ridge pole as possible, will have the same effect.
