Can anyone point me where to look for info?

I’m fairly new to this. A few years ago (just before COVID, I was traveling through New Mexico. I stopped at a commercial campground. (KOA Roswell, I *think,* but am not sure.)

After I had paid, I said, “I just want to hang my hammock and get some sleep!”

”Oh, no, you can’t use a hammock here! You’ll damage our trees!”

    Okay. Fine.

Since then, I have wanted a soloution that would allow me to hammock-camp anywhere I could put a tent.

I saw the “turtledog “ stuff, & thought that looked really interesting.

I’m not much of a tools guy, though. How can I do this?

I’ll try to attach pics of what I have so far.

    [AIMG][XFLOAT][/XFLOAT][/AIMG]

This is only a few feet apart, but I’m getting somewhere.

    It’s 54 inches high.

Can anyone help me understand how long a rail or pole I need, how I can make it so it will go in the car, and what it needs to be made of? I have zero idea on strength. I though of pipe, rod (aluminum?), and wood dowel, but I’m really uncertain about any of this.

any comments or suggestions would be welcome!

I'm impressed/concerned that you had three pairs of crutches handy. We just have one family pair and hope that no more than one person needs them at any one time.

    Heh.

there’s a place in Tulsa called the HOW Foundation Thrift Shop. They had more pairs of crutches than they could store!

I managed to get 3 pair of tall crutches on the cheap!

(Still not clear on the proper lashing.)

An ingenious use of a bolster.

    Here is a bipod stand.

    Bipod Hammock Stand 1.jpg

The legs and top rail can be made from 1 3/8"chain-link fence rail, or from Schedule 40 Aluminum tubes.

The only advantage that I can see over your crutch solutions, is ease of set-up for those unfamiliar with the crutch set-up.

I’ve never seen that hardware before. What are those things on the end of the long bar?

These look interesting. Easier than cutting the t-connectors, and lighter (?) than the L-pass-through connectors.

So, just place four of these on the top rail, insert the legs, adjust their angles and tighten.

The dimensions state 32mm Inside Diameter (ID), which is right at 1.259-inches.

My Schedule 40 6063-T5 Aluminum Pipe has an Outside Diameter (OD) of 1.315, so 5/100ths difference should be no problem.

I'm guessing that the screw/nut are not top of the line, so just replace with SST Grade 8 screw/nut and maybe never look back.

    This seems pretty slick.

a bit offtopic, i won't comment on the turtle design as i'm not a big fan or researched it at all, and there's people here helping already, but on your general idea:

while you're experimenting, also look into the following options

    - the tensahedron design (much easier to build, and can be made to come apart to fit in any car boot etc)
    - the "half tensa" for vehicle camping: you can use half of the tensahedron above on one end (with some decent ground anchor, just enough to stop it from sliding on the ground), and the roofrack of the vehicle or such on the other end. this enables you to accomodate two hammocks with one complete tensahedron style stand.
    - also when the vehicle can be part of the stand, it is possible to use just one sturdy pole on one end, with two very solid anchors (and the vehicle again on the other end). this is the most compact setup, but also the one which really depends on the ability to rig very reliable ground anchors

    have fun experimenting
