I can't tell from the pix but it seems like the tripods are aligned to whatever position is needed to support the ridge pole. I would have thought they would be in some kind of alignment with the ridge pole - no?
I really like the idea of the shortened tripods. Do you know of any "issues" with these vs. the longer tripods other than irregularities in the ground you're hanging over?
    Thanks for the reply.

Seat height is the main thing, if youre using it indoors. That and your short tripods can have a smaller footprint.
Turtlelady's original stand is quite low to the ground.

Outdoors you have to consider splash from rain getting to your underside.

Today I did some modifying on my Turtledog - its been a great stand but with my 11' Argon hammock from Dutch I wasn't going to be able to use it without finding a different way to attach to the center pole... so I added another 5' section of pole to the center! This will allow me to actually suspend my tarp over the top too since the tarp has a 12 ridgeline. In the past I've just clipped it in at the ends without it being taut and used tieouts to keep it in place.

I ended up using a set of whoopie slings I won at the Michigan Fall Hang to attach it - here is how it turned out:

The rope I used to use with my ENO is still hanging from the carabiner in this pic:

I can finally join the Turtledog club! My son and I are going to the Cub Scout Fall family Campout next weekend and were dreading the idea of sleeping in a t* t, so today I whipped up a TDS and tomorrow I'll be whipping up another. My wife's boyfriend had some some cypress 2x2s he'd ripped and var stained that he gave me for a 12 pack, which was quite fortuitous because the local lumberyard doesn't carry 2x2, I have no way to rip 2x4, and HD and Lowe's 2x2's were just terrible. I have the option to do multiple length RP's but I think I like 13' since it works good with my tarp. I'll get some pics tomorrow when I build the second one.

I also would have traded my first wife and a 12 pack for 6 2x2s. Heck, I'd have given him a case to take her.

I am planning to make one of these soon myself, though I do have to ask, has anyone considered puttign rubber on the tripod feet, like from an old tire?

if you're using outdoors in the grass, I'm not sure I see the advantage since ground is pretty non-skid already; however, if you plan to use on pavement, porch, or something of that nature, I could see the advantage. Interesting thought.

Well that is exactly what I was considering. Since I live in Mobile, Alabama I was considering setting up a Hammock on the Mardi Gras parade route.

Some have used innertube rubber, some have used plasti dip, and some, including me, have used rubber feet, (like for chairs.)
