I tried a 3 piece and it bent in a few minutes. If you find a solution please post it. I need my sections less than 6'. Cost is more of an issue than weight.

Maybe make an extension on the tripod part itself so you could hang a tarp. That way you could do two sections of 5'11" for a total of almost 12 feet. Hanging a 12' hammock will still be a bit tight. If money were not an issue then there is always a Hammeck stand which is the cadillac of stands. I do not own one but one day I will.

I have a three piece top rail made of chain link fence rail. It doesn't bend. Your hammock needs to hang close to the ends of the top rail. If you hang further toward the center the rail has more pressure and bend some.

That's what I was using with the hammock hanging on the end caps. I think the problem is there is too much play where the pieces slip together.

It's the chain link fence pole. After some tinkering it appears I was hanging at too tight of an angle. I let the hammock closer to the ground and the bend went away. I just need to get my Ridge pole higher to hang higher.

    Do you hang low?

No, I hang at regular sit height. My tripod legs are 8 ft. Before being connected, my middle rail piece is 75 inches and the two end pieces are 30 inches each.

Edit: I also happened to think that sometimes if I have the tripod ends too close together the rail will bow sideways a little--doesn't need weight to do it.

I'm using a 3 piece system and have a slight upward bend, which I have virtually eliminated (see the later posts).

I don't have any sideways bend.

Can you take a picture of how you have everything set-up on the end? That may give a better idea.

What's the best robust 2-piece center pole to use for a big guy (290 pounds)? It needs to be 2 pieces so I can fit it in my car.

I've been to Lowes (next stop is Home Depot) and none of the fencing there had the proper joints to slip the 2 pieces of pipe into each other (they were the same diameter on both ends). I even tried the super-heavy (and $42 each!) metal electrical? conduit? pipe and that had very rough screw threads on both ends, so you couldn't bring it together easily without two wrenches and a joint piece. Home Depot is my next stop but any suggestions on where to look?

I should be all set with all of the other pieces to start this build.
