Has anyone ever used EMT(electrical metallic tubing) for a top rail? Both 3/4 and 1" EMT has about the same wall thickness as 1 3/8" chainlink top rail. EMT is less expensive, but doesn't have a swaged end.

Would be a cheap thing to try out... Go ahead and let us know... The connection you use would be the critical thing...

Seem to recall someone trying it on a Turtlelady Stand. They may have used the standard coupling. Not sure of the outcome.

If you hang directly from the attachment points like in that picture there is very little flex on the ridge pole, which is what causes the failures I've heard about.

And start long and you can always cut the pole and the 2x4s later to a shorter length... I started at 7' because every piece of 2x2 I found had 8-10 inches of knot or crack at one end...
yeah, I went with 2x3 simply because the 2x2's "furring strips" at HD were in really bad shape! Decent, clear and sanded 8x2x2's in pine or redwood are $8 or $9 each. OUCH!

I get mine from a real lumberyard. "Clear or better" pt 2"x2"x8' are $3 each and are virtually knot free and pretty straight grained.

Good thought, I'll have to check out our local lumberyard. Thanks!

If you have access to a table saw just rip them down from a larger piece, that's what I did.
