Now I'm starting to think that adding that tensioned line eye to eye on top of the pole may have kept whatever bend was there even when unloaded.
As you say success because it did hold me through the night, I plan another hang Wed and thru the weekend...hopefully all will go well.

    Thanks for the input.
Is your joint basically in the middle? Like two 7' pieces or thereabouts?

While I think this is just fine, when I was doing my longer one, I did three pieces, (actually four so I'd have some flexibility in length, I did two 5' one 4' and one 6' so I can do 9', 10', 11', 14' and 16'.) So mine is 5', 5' and 4'. One thing I liked about this is that it keeps me from having the joint right in the middle where the deflection would be the greatest from just the weight of the poles themselves.

Either way, I think you're perfectly fine the way you have it set up. And you have your belt and suspenders going too so no worries.

    Enjoy!

    Two More TurtleDog stands....

Thanks for the help from the great community here in selecting materials and making the Camporee MUCH more enjoyable. Set up two of these and they ROCK!

Used 7 foot poles from local metal supply house at $1.70 a foot. A little high, but VERY stable and light. Still hoping to find some eye nuts to put under the bolts for hanging the hammock. The large carabiners from Lowe's did a good job and with the pressure on the side of the top rail, had no issues with my 200# and no flex in the top rail. Just need to get a few holes drilled for stake out and limit the expansion of the tripod.

Any suggestions for hanging the hammock to keep the weight centered under the eye hooks?? I had planned to slip the LARGE biners over the end , but had the eye bolts too close to the end and looked like a good way to end up on the ground...

One incident with a large scout bouncing on the hammock that resulted in colapse. The tripods had been moved in an attempt to use them for a support for a wind block. I told them it was only a hammock support and likely the repositioned tripods were not balanced. Anyhow, both TDs held the sleepers through two nights and withstood constant winds over 20MPH....

Nice pair of TD's. Probably will be getting a number of questions. I'm I correct in assuming the legs are aluminum tubing? And if so, did you use an insert in the tube at the bolt locations?

talldaddy, olddog is correct, I for one wish to know a few more particulars on the use of the square tubing for legs. I assume it is aluminum, am I correct? Also, did you use a wooden plug in the ends of the tubes where the bolts go through, to prevent possible collapse when tightening? Do you have any sort of weight comparison of your legs weight to that of pine 2x2's? I believe you have sparked some interest among the TDS crowd, and I look forward to learning more about your construction.

The legs are 1 inch thick walled aluminum tubing. I did not use inserts in the pipe before attaching the hinge. The does sound like a good idea. I'll have to look at Lowe's and see if I can find some suitable material... 1x1 is the outside measurements. I have a couple of small pieces from trimming the center leg to allow it to close the gate hinge. Hope to find a nice fitting piece of lumber at Lowe's

I love this thread and went ahead and built two. One for me and one for my 9 year old nephew. Thanks to everyone for all the info and great, illustrating pics!

Pics of mine will come later today. Unfortunately, I don't have a shot of my nephew's as I delivered his Wednesday night (it was a last minute, rush job add to his overall birthday gift). Now he has the means to hang last year's Christmas present (an ENO SN modded with whoopies with tree straps) wherever he wants. YAY!!
