Post Photo album trip report :)

Okie dokie, guys and gals, I'm back alive and well!

First of all, THANKS to all those who offered and/or rendered advice, suggestions, water updates, and support!!! What a great place this is!!!

Second of all, here is a link to the photo album I just posted (126 pics) with very complete captions, which are a trip report--
    Photo album trip report.

We all had a great time and would go right back! Matt and I hung every night, the first two without our rainflies up; the last it did rain.

    Enjoy!

Yeah, I need help to identify that little juvenile snake. Certainly has the triangular head of a viper, but the pattern isn't anything I recognize from the two species of adult poisonous snakes in Maryland.

We also saw toads and centipedes, just no pics to prove it. I was a slacker.

Looks like an eastern garter snake. Here, this mentions how they may fool you: http://webpages.charter.net/snethert...headshape.html

Also, says this "When cornered, this snake often flattens its head and body and tries to strike." which is what it looks like, snake flattening head, from here: http://mdc.mo.gov/discover-nature/fi...rn-gartersnake

Your pictures 16/17 are where my son when he was about 12 would call "green slime pond." We'd bike up from downstream.

Oh, and on Reno monument, there actually is a monument to Garland, you must have missed it. Here's a pic: http://www.southmountain.stonesentinels.com/Garland.php There's also a few back up the road to the radio tower, on the left, which are kind of stuck in the middle of nowhere but are very nice monuments.

Hazards of living close to know this stuff Glad you had a good walk.

(still looking at your pictures...little further along)

Camp David is actually more north than what you were told. Those towers are on a road called "Intermod Alley" which is hilarious if you're a radio operator. There's a side trail running from Gambrill Park to the area around Camp David, maybe next time you're up.

    Very nice photojournal, btw

Thanks! I did run across some stuff on the 'net after posting the pic, that said that about some snakes, but didn't find such a good photo. I'd say that was it, an eastern garter snake. The flared head threw me and I played it "better safe than sorry." Of course, it didn't stick around long enough for me to try to get close to.

I assume it was duckweed. A gourmet smorgasbord for water fowl. But maybe it was spirogyra. My youngest did a science project on the stuff in high school.

That's not a monument, that's a misplaced headstone. mumble, mumble.

Thanks for all the info. Good stuff!

I was told several things, including "they don't what you to know."

Well, seeing as how you can go to Google Maps and pull it up (seriously, try it, go Camp David, MD in the search field) I don't think that's so much a big deal.

Now if you decided to go up and take a look around, that probably would be frowned upon.
