Tarp line hernias

Anyone know what caused my tarp lines to do this? Age? Heat? Angry gods? The rips seem to be where the cord was folded and tied into a bundle. Yesterday I set up my DN for the first time and the lines were fine. Bundled them back up the way they were packed and today when i go to the lake and set up for the second time I find 4 out of 6 tarp lines like this.

I'm obviously gonna have to replace the tarp lines. Anyone have any suggestions about what cord i should buy? I was going to just buy enough of whatever i get to use as a structural ridgeline as well as tarp line. Maybe some Zing-it?

P.S. The lines seems to still be able to hold the pressure. It was a very windy day and they kept the tarp pretty snug. Just don't think I need to risk it in the jungle tho.

I've had that happen with some no tangle line. I think it because the inner core is stiff to help make it tangle resistant but when folded it can poke through the outer sheath. That's what happened to mine anyways. The hernias are a problem if you want to slide a hitch over it. I'd consider complaining and getting replacements or just get some new line like zing-it.

Were the ropes exposed to moisture? it could be that they have different dynamics when wet...ie the outer was stretched b/c it was wet and the inner wasnt...then you folded them and the outer dried and shrunk..

Nope, no moisture. Brand new , bone dry, and the second time out of the bag as far as i know. They are very stiff like Bubba described.

Ahh that's why this stuff is so stiff.. its No tangle.

Lolol...what's funny is the insane knot this stuff whipped into as i was trying to hang it. Wind was heavy and the lines balled themselves collectively up into a mess.

From my experience, it's when the inner core material & the outer core don't have the same stretch factor. It's like there's no where for the extra material on the inside to go after the tension is off & it bulges out like a hernia.

This can be a problem with all double braid cord/rope. Unless the outer braid and inner braid are matched in size and properties, the inner braid will do exactly as pictured.

Mine did that on the very first use, too. I figured it was because I was using Nite Eze Figure 9s, then I noticed that the same thing happened with the tensioners on the tarp itself. I think that rather than messing with swapping them with the same stuff I'll replace them on my own with something better and be done with it.
