Weasel and I did our test this weekend. Went camping at my brother's in Columbia, MO. Took my oldest son too...who had NOT treated anything with Permethrin.

Trip report...oldest son found several small ticks either crawling on him or attached a couple of times over the weekend.

Weasel checked himself daily, and found not one tick. He had one mosquito bite on his wrist...while not wearing his treated shirt.

I didn't check for ticks at all during the trip...got home yesterday, and found not a single tick anywhere, nor did I have any bites of any kind whatsoever.

Seems to have worked very well for us.

Exactly as I would have expected! Excellent!

Found a Summer Shirt, Brand Name "ORAVIS" . That is called "BUZZ OFF"

I can see the Cotton being the absorbent for the Chemical. Had to share this, info.

So had to read the care label. List bunch of insects. Good for 25 washings!.
    Fiber: 60% cotton, 40% Polyester.

Its content As stated on label:
Active Ingredient .52% W/W EPA Reg No. 74843-2 EPA Est No. 7483-NC-001
"Dispose of garment in trash. Wash Separately from other clothing.

Köppen also makes a line of clothes with their "No Fly Zone" technology that is infused with permethrin, supposedly good for up to 70 washings. I have a pair of the Torrant pants.

Curious: I looked up the first EPA Reg No, and found the MFG claim for the process and effectiveness of binding the permethrin, which was for "beyond the product lifetime, 70 washings."

So far, this thread has covered clothing to a good degree...

What about bug nets and no-see-ums?

I'm making a net for a friend, and no-see-ums (Biting Midges) are an issue in their area. I have some wonderful camo tulle, which is similar in hole size than the mosquito netting I use, and has much smaller holes than normal tulle, but I'm concerned no-see-ums will intrude.

Has anyboyd (Sgt. Rock?) been in no-see-um country with a permethrin treated mosquito/Tulle net and survived no-see-um free?

In summer, ventillation of the net is a plus, and my options right now are this (very cool) camo tulle or I'm going to get Organza which will stop anything, but is a bit restrictive to airflow, similar to noseeum net...

Permethrin just works. Period. Is it the magic bullet? Nope. But it REALLY does save a lot of 'buggy' aggravation in the woods! With the amount of Lime Disease being carried by Deer Ticks here in New England, going into the woods without treatment is akin to rolling dice with your health!

I use it all the time, both the liquid and the spray, on just about everything.

STORY: Sprayed an old blue cotton moving mat I had found, and left it on the ground one night as a changing mat for the morning. I had folded it over, and when I unfolded it, I found a sting of dead ticks in the fold! Sold me right there!

REI sells the Sawyer's Permethrin, both types. I think online as well.

I used it this weekend at the NEHHA, in North Western Mass, where several other hangers got ticks. I got none.

It works. And when used in combination with a real repellent (think Picardin or Deet), you should be as well-protected as possible.

    Permethrin. It's what's for hanging.

with all those ticks back east.. Anyone try a experiment on one?. catch one alive, place it on a fabric that has been treated.. then watch it?..

Like was mentioned with Lyme.. why risk it.. Spray... & be safe while swing in the breeze.

I've wore buzz-off clothing for years now. Never have had a problem with bugs. I also have 2 pairs of BDU's and a boonie hat made by buzz-off for the US Marines. I put a black widow spider inside my boonie hat and folded it so she couldnt excape and in about 20 minutes she was dead.

If you check, I believe the Buzz Off clothing is treated with Permethrin .
