    DIY Top Quilt

After purchasing my new thread injector last week here's my latest creation...well almost, it just needs some nice fluffy white stuff put inside. Extremtextil was out of stock of their 860fp (EU scale) down, my order is on hold while they wait for a delivery.

It's a box walled construction made from Pertex microlight, the quilt width tapers towards the foot end, the dimensions are/should be...

    Length: 1.90m/75"
    Head width: 1.32m/52"
    Foot width: 1.13m/44.5"
    Baffle height: 4cm/1.5"
Loft: 5cm/2" Ill find out when it's stuffed.
Weight: somewhere around 550g/19.5oz with down and hardware.
It should be rated to about 0C/30F.

Laid out, the left hand side is open waiting for the down to arrive.

    Baffles and chambers.

Contrasting stitching on top drawcord channel.

Bottom drawcord detail - I won't be using this cord, I have some lighter stuff on order.

I'm just using my phone so the WB and colours are all over the shop, it's a greenish blue colour.

Overall I'm really impressed but am going crazy waiting for the down, should be about 2-3 weeks apparently. I'll update this thread/post with more photos once I've got it all finished, I just wanted to share what I had so far

Good looking start to your quilt.
I love that Pertex Microlite. Very hard to get here in the States.

yup, it has a really nice feel to it and has a good DWR treatment, not the lightest but that's not the end of the world

I say well done. So far it looks like a great undertaking. Keep it up, DIY can be quite addicting.

Nice sewing, Col, good photos as well.

I'm looking at doing my own DIY TQ so I'll keep an eye on your thread. Good to know about extremtextil but I can't find that grade of down on their site..?

Also, what made you choose that fabric?

The 860fp down is out of stock so I guess they took it off, I was told 3-4 weeks until they get some more, that was on April 19th so I guess they'll have some more between May 10th and 17th.

I chose the Pertex because I just had it hanging around, I made a couple underquilts with it a little while back, I ordered more than I needed so had enough left for this TQ once I got my thread injector

Ah OK. So would you still have used it if you didn't have it lying around? Actually, if you have a link to some kind of comparison chart of fabrics, that would save me asking you all the noob questions!

If I didn't have it lying around I'd probably go for the 26gsm stuff from extremtextil, as I'd be getting the down from them anyway I might as well save on postage rather than ordering from elsewhere.
    This stuff - http://www.extremtextil.de/catalog/R...sqm::1680.html

Not cheap but really light, I'm getting material sample books from them with the down so I should be able to find out what it feels like.

The pertex microlight is really soft though, like a soft silk with a very good drape, the only downsides are it's a little heavier at about 45gsm and not as breathable as some fabrics fom what I've heard but still by no means bad being Pertex.

Unfortunately I don't know of any comparison sheets or whatever, most of the time you just have to research or ask experts like on here

That's good to know, cheers. Especially about the fabric samples. I may well send them an email.

Good luck with the rest of the project. Hope mine turns out as good!

Link to my thread in case Col or anyone wants to offer any input. Apologies for the shameless self-promotion, Col!
